I believe this will always be Chita's role. As she one her first Tony for it. It was also created around her vocal style/range, and obviously her dance ability.
Still I think Patti could be great in this role. Though I don't think anyone will surpass Chita in the role.

Patty Duke was wonderful in OKLAHOMA.
Yes, MM, I saw Linda Blair in GREASE - she was terrific. She worked every day for months on the dancing (serviceable, but she was so hot in the costumes, who cared that she wasn't quite at the level of the professional dancers onstage with her?)and voice lessons with Joan Lader. That warmly textured speaking voice lent itself to quite a lovely and consistent singing voice. I was rather unexpectedly impressed.

That's cool. She sang "It's Too Late" by Carole King in Sarah T. - Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic and she sounded sweet there, if not great. I can see how she would sound better with lessons.
She's another person who I think would've been fun in the Whorehouse concert, or Lynda Carter.

Posted: 11/3/06 at 9:53amI really don't understand the reason for this revival - second rate show. Granted a first rate cast for the revival, but then again, so was the original cast and it failed miserably.

i really can't stop thinking of this show. i don't want the actor/musician concept with it. though i can't help but think of what bizarre musical stylings that could be re-invented for the show. the music in this show is CRAZY.
i'm with you guys in the hopes for a cast cd

Posted: 11/7/06 at 5:03pmThe score is really gorgeous and brilliant. I've never seen the show, so I can't say if it's good, but I've never heard positive things.

Posted: 11/7/06 at 6:33pmPeople, the actor/musician concept is John Doyle's TRADEMARK! Whenever he directs, this will definitely appear! Sweeney Todd, Company, Mack & Mabel... they all use this element. It's not a gimmick but a signature.

I don't see Doyle doing it again, at least not right after Company and Sweeney, he's too smart for it. It's not innovative if he does it over and over. It's too limiting for it to be a "signiture", it would greatly defer the amount shows he could direct.

Sweeney Todd, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham 1988
Into the Woods, York Theatre Royal 1997
Cabaret, Watermill Theatre Newbury 1998
Moll Flanders, Salisbury Playhouse 1998
Irma La Douce, Watermill Theatre Newbury 1999
Sinbad, Watermill Theatre Newbury 1999
Mack & Mabel, Watermill Theatre Newbury 2005
Company, Cincinatti Playhouse' Robert S. Marx Theatre 2006
ALL of them are in actor/musician concept. Do you think he will overthrow the concept after so many years? Even Cabaret was done in this style!

I just don't like the Doyle actors-with-instruments thing. Actors need to focus on acting, musicians on instruments. If their focus is going to be split, then cut the ticket prices.

I agree. I always felt this when I saw one of those lame shows where they have the same people singing AND dancing.

Well, obviously, some people can handle both. What you see are talents, guys. Yeah, it's a hard job to focus on both, but some people DO can! If you want to do a Doyle show, you better be good!

I mean the way things are going now people are going to need to be quintuple threats...
1. Acting
2. Singing
3. Dancing

5. Live Set Piece

Sure, but now he's famous and has won a tony for his directing, people are going to get very tired of it. He may keep it, but it would not be a smart move.

Posted: 11/26/06 at 3:41amDoyle surely has directed productions that don't actor-musician concept. In fact, he's directing the LA Opera's production of The Rise and the Fall of the City of Mohagony, starring Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald. Gosh, I can't wait for it!

You can't randomly change the ages of the characters in this show. The time line is very inportant. Anna was 18 when Angel was born. Anna is "now" 48 and Angel is 30. Yes, Chita and Liza were considerably older when they did it, but they looked the right ages on a big Broadway stage.

"LuPone is about 6 or 7 years older than the role. if you add 6 or 7 years to Angel as well....really, Patti and Emily Skinner" I will be preparing my pass port, if this is the case.
From what I've read about the show, it didn't flop because of the score. Apparently, the book needs some serious re-working and the set was kind of weird and ugly. I might just ask my teacher. She was the standby for Liza.

^Same! Everytime I hear it I think how fantastic she'd be.
I'm just dying to hear her "Don't 'Ah Ma' Me"
