“A bit like ‘Moulin Rouge!,’ there will be an Elvis stage musical; we’re getting into that right now.”
Luhrmann wrote and directed the 2001 film “Moulin Rouge!” which was adapted for the Main Stem, opening on July 25, 2019. The production won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Luhrmann served as a creative consultant for the story within the Broadway musical, which continues to run at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
In terms of Luhrmann’s involvement in the impending “Elvis” musical, he said, “I’m not sure I’ll direct it, but I’ll produce it.”
Is this the Elvis musical opening in Australia in August or a different one?

As visually stunning as it could be I think it would be difficult to find an Elvis the likes of Austin butler. And Tom hanks was impeccable. But it definitely lends itself so very well

I don't think so. While that site frames the show as being "brand new", judging by the writers' names (Sean Cercone and David Abbinanti), it's the same show that has previously had a few small scale productions: https://www.playscripts.com/play/3402#productions. So it's still "pretty new", but it isn't at such an early stage that it would match up with this new announcement. (The libretto can be read at https://broadwaylicensing.com/shows/regional-favorites/elvis/, for the curious.)
Make it a ridiculous spectacle, and keep it as a Vegas revue. I don’t think (obviously could be wrong) this idea would last long on Broadway.
I suggested this back in July. Danny Burstein was born to play the colonel.
