Someone just gave up their chance at winning a Tony. Has an actor ever taken a performance off weekly for a PLAY before?!?

Pretty sure this will have no effect on the Tonys. As long as the producers feel it's warranted, I doubt anyone else cares.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Everyone sitting in the audience on a Wednesday night is certainly going to care, and there will be a line every week at the box office getting refunds and exchanges. I've not seen the play yet, so I shouldn't judge yet, but I can't imagine a role in a straight play being that taxing that it requires taking an extra night off weekly.

I was referring to those associated with Tony voting.

To the AUDIENCE? Maybe, but let's face it, one Oscar doesn't automatically make you a box office draw.

Even though we were discussing this a few weeks ago on this board, the news of her taking a show off still seems like it was announced quite late. I bought my ticket a long time ago after it sold out at the Public and I know I raced to my calendar to make sure I wasn't seeing it on a Wednesday. I know we all say you see a show for the show but in these limited runs with big celebrities you can't deny that the person is a draw. People are going to be upset for sure.

I can't and won't speak to why she is taking a show off but I will say I'm surprised she's taking an evening and not a matinee. If I am seeing a matinee I go in knowing I could likely see an understudy or two.

Pretty sure Alexander Sharp took off two performances a week and still won for his incredible performance in Curious.

As for the lateness, I remember I bought my Hamilton ticket about two days BEFORE they announced Lin wouldn't be doing Sunday matinees (they announced in May) and now, I'm seeing Javi in two weeks when I go. I'm very disappointed to not see the creator in his show, and I have been since I found out, but everyone says how great Javi is so, maybe Lupita's alternate will offer an even more stellar performance :)

The poster asked if an actor has ever taken a performance off weekly for a PLAY before. I said yes. I have seen Curious 3 times, I know the amount of physical work, energy, choreography, etc. is in the show. I know it is not comparable, I simply answered their question.

What may be easy for one person may be difficult for another, it goes either way. I don't think we can go and compare roles and shows and decide that someone should be able to do 8 shows a week because their role isn't as hard as so and so's...

Humans are not all the same. We aren't cookie cutter.. We are humans.

She is doing one less show, and we have no clue why. Move on.

The show is an ensemble piece, and The Girl is not the largest role. If Lupita gets a day off, what about the rest of the cast who have the same amount (if not more) dialogue and stage time. The show is gorgeous and I'm sure her understudy will be fantastic, but it's a little odd, especially in this circumstance.

And, as has been pointed out, it's N'Yongo's face that's the largest thing on the marquee, and her name is over the title. As far as selling tickets is concerned, it appears that they're selling N'Yongo more than Eclipsed.

It would be similar to Carol Channing in Hello, Dolly! (starring Lucy Schmeeler on Wednesday evenings...).

I guess we really don't have a choice in the matter. I mean it is what it is. She needs Wednesday off for whatever the reason may be. It looks like this was not the original plan, she may have a sudden personal commitment she has to honor and that's why this announcement is just now being made.

Well Helen Mirren didn't have an alternate and she slated it in The Queen. And she never left the stage. And let's not forget August Osage County which is 3 hrs long and has the older lady running all over that set.

This seems rather lazy to me. I get if she had a conflict but to take every Wedneday off just seems like she's not taking it very serious. And what's sad is she's still going to win the Tony. Because people love her for some reason.

No one even mentioned her name in the previe thread so the part must not be that interesting .
