This is in my top 5 all time favorite musicals, and I only wish it had lasted longer on Broadway.
It’s a masterpiece and should have swept the Tonys. Easily one of the best musicals written in the last 25 years.

I agree, it's wonderful and a great primer on how to stand up to sadistic bullies. Probably better than the book and the book is great.
I just saw it in London in January and it looks as good as if it had opened recently. One of the best musicals ever written, in my opinion. And the movie adaptation is actually really lovely as well.
Easily one of my favorite shows of all time. Every element of that show from the writing of the book and score to the exquisite design was unlike anything I've ever seen. It was truly like stepping into the world of Roald Dahl.

Fantastic show, saw it on Broadway and the West End. We had great seats in the West End and during "When I Grow Up", the kids flew over our heads on the swings -lol. Mind boggling to me this did not win Tony for "Best Musical".

The movie adaptation is SO well done. I wish it was in theaters!

Saw this show many times in NY and have revisited twice in London since it closed here. Still just as moving, funny, and perfectly crafted as it ever was. A show that fires on all cylinders with phenomenal musicality, brilliant lyrics, a smart book, and direction and design that are still some of the best I've seen. Shame it didn't sweep the Tonys while it was here, but glad it's still proving to be such a success across the pond.

I’m almost more offended by it losing Best Score to the incredibly subpar Kinky Boots. Matilda’s score is masterful.

Agree 100%.
I will never fully understand the awards domination of Kinky Boots that year. Matilda is just an across-the-board successful show- a great book, a fantastic score, impeccable production, and it manages to both distinguish itself from the source material and elevate it.
Fell in love with it when I saw it not long after the London opening. My only complaint than was it was hard to understand the lyrics ( thankfully that is not a problem anymore ) but it really is a brilliant written show, and yes those lyrics are some of the best written.
I was lucky to see it in Stratford and though no subsequent run had the precise magic of that thrust staging (especially with the Swings REALLY going out over the audience), I loved it in the West End and on Broadway. It makes me glad that it's still running in London. That it didn't run much longer in New York seemed like a warning sign that something was very wrong with the market, in retrospect...I mean, it's just such a great freaking show.

Completely agree. Kinky Boots flew in as the "feel good" show, but comparing each part of these shows against each other, Matilda clears it in every category.
There was also.a lot of politicking about Kinky Boots being a homegrown Broadway show vs. the British transfer. I don't know why Matilda got specific heat for that, I vaguely remember in theater press some kind of impression people had of RSC being snobby or presumptuous about the show's success. I don't know, silly.
