Posted: 9/19/11 at 12:32amAny news re casting for MERRILY at Encores? I seem to have heard somewhere that Colin Donnell was cast as Franklin. Does anybody have better insight? The show has supposedly been cast already.

Posted: 9/19/11 at 10:27amColin Donnell - heaven! Although, having seen Anything Goes so recently, it's hard for me to imagine him anything other than sweetness and light, the talent will I'm sure win out and he will prove every inch Franklin S.

Posted: 9/19/11 at 6:26pmEncores! is notorious for waiting til the last hour to announce casting (with the exception of Anyone Can Whistle when they announced Foster in October for a June run).

Encores! is notorious for waiting til the last hour to announce casting (with the exception of Anyone Can Whistle when they announced Foster in October for a June run).
There have been many instances where Encores has announced casting well in advance: Victoria Clark for FOLLIES and JUNO; Kristin Chenoweth for THE APPLE TREE; Victor Garber for OF THEE I SING!; Christine Ebersole for APPLAUSE; Patti LuPone for CAN CAN, etc.

Posted: 9/19/11 at 6:36pmNot that it matters much but (only because I remember it well) WHISTLE was in April not June..

I think a few of those shows were chosen with those actors in mind, though.
I'm really anxious to see who's cast as well. After the great casting of younger, lesser-known actors for Where's Charley? I'm totally confident in whoever winds up in Merrily.

Posted: 9/20/11 at 2:03pmThose are all big names as well. No offense to the actors already mentioned for this production, but they aren't NAMES like the other ones.

Posted: 9/20/11 at 2:08pmI don't think that Merrily needs names to sell it. The people who want to see a production of this show probably won't care very much who's cast. If the name I've heard for Mary is accurate, it's someone who's well-established but hardly a name outside of theatrical circles.

Posted: 9/20/11 at 2:18pmI'd rather LuPone play Charley. I'm sure her Franklin Shepard Inc. would be incredible.

Posted: 9/20/11 at 2:20pmRaul Esparza has been doing her "Franklin Shepard Inc" for years now.

"Jordan, what I tell you in bed should remain between us."
Ms. LuPone certainly SHOULD remain between you in bed.

Posted: 9/21/11 at 8:36amDoesn't Encores, with its established subscription base, almost always sell out or nearly sell out no matter what the show is or who's in it?
#16MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG- ENCORES. Any news re casting?
Posted: 9/21/11 at 8:47amNot even close. Many (most) of the lesser-known shows have tons of empty seats in all sections of the theatre.

Posted: 9/21/11 at 5:57pmThis is one of my favorites. I'd love to see Leslie Kritzer play Mary. Her "Now You Know" in Sondheim on Sondheim was fantastic.
