No, but they should be made in such a way that will make the show money. People from out of town won't be pouring into the Golden to see White.



Maybe they won't and maybe it won't last till January. But unless you are an investor in the show, your level of outrage at this is a bit overdone.

IDK. I don't like Rudin. He seems like an A-hole because of how he acts with some of his shows. I don't love his elitism.

Also, I only mentioned Parker because someone else did. I'm not so sure that she would be my first pick.

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, producer Scott Rudin said this afternoon that most of the show’s Tony-nominated cast would be replaced for the extension. “As with any extension, there will be a recasting,” Rudin said. “We will get a few more weeks with this cast.”

They are not, however, getting "a few more weeks with this cast". And I'm guessing they knew that well in advance of the announcement today.

I'm not a fan of Rudin either, but no one has been duped here. Never had it been promised anywhere that the original cast would be continuing through the extension. And Metcalf isn't a load-bearing star name.

Yes, Rudin is a sleaze bag. He knew the cast was leaving when he announced the extension, and when Metcalf won the Tony, lots of tickets were sold on that basis. The Telecharge site says nothing about a new cast. I thought I had time to see this, perhaps during the summer, but now I had to race to see this cast, and I live out of town. Love Julie White, and might see it again when she takes over, but of course I want to see the Tony-winning performance.

I think you're misinterpreting what he is saying. If on June 5, he announces the extension, but notes the original cast will still be around for a few more weeks, well... they were still playing for 7 more weeks at that point. You seem to be deciding he meant a few more weeks AFTER their original end date, which he never said.

I'm honestly baffled by this outrage. This cast CHOSE to leave when they were contracted. They were definitely given the option to extend (as evidenced by Houdyshell's extension) and 3/4 said "No." They obviously also just came to this conclusion last week, as evidenced by Julie White suddenly withdrawing from a concert she had only been announced for the week before that. You can hate Rudin all you want, but this shouldn't be one of the reasons. And the casting change certainly shouldn't change your mind either. If White had opened the show instead of Metcalf, no one would've said boo and she likely would've been nominated for/won the Tony. Not to discredit Laurie Metcalf, but she was given a ripe part and ran with it in a similar way I imagine Julie White would have and, in fact, will. Same goes for the other incoming replacements.

What happened is you misread the article. When he said they'd be around for a few more week he meant from the day of the interview till when they were contracted for, which was indeed a few more weeks. He didn't mean a few extra weeks from the original closing date. You misread it and are projecting onto it. There was no "promise". Nothing about this is sleazy.

From the Washington Post article announcing the extension in early June:

"The current cast is only contracted to perform through July 25, but Rudin said he is hoping that they will extend their contracts for at least a few weeks beyond that. In any event, the producer said he will recast the roles if he has to, to accommodate the extension."

The first article was somewhat ambiguous and could legitimately be interpreted in multiple ways. But this removes all ambiguity and if he was trying to deceive he wouldn't be as clear as this.

There you have it. He hopes they could extend but didn't know for sure and will recast if he has to. No guarantees or promises made. Can't be clearer than that, can it? If it matters that much to you to see the original cast and you know there will likely be a cast change but a definitive start date for the new cast or who it will be hasn't been announced, if you go ahead and book post July 25 based on a statement as non-committal as this and assume the cast will extend a few weeks when even the lead producer says he isn't sure, you have no one to blame but yourself. Of course, if you hate the guy, you'll make it fit your narrative and see what you want to see.
