Oh please, that voice has been "sweetened" and artificially enhanced (if not completely pre-recorded) at every concert she's ever given -- that's simply a fact. A good friend who has worked sound at several major venues in the country since the 80s has played me sound board tapes of what is actually coming out of her mouth and into her microphone BUT NOT, god forbid, going out live to the audience and I'm sorry to tell you but THE B*TCH CANNOT SING..... He pitch and timbre and breath control are laughably awful.
Sorry, but if I'm paying money to hear someone perform, either live or on CD, my preference is for real singers who don't need a team of engineers in order to just sound decent. Aretha, Gladys, Patti, Chaka, Jennifer, k.d., Al Green, Luther Vandross, Freddie Mercury, Dolly Parton, Prince, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Ella Fitzgerald, Annie Lennox, Cassandra Wilson, Jimmy Scott, Sarah Vaughan to name a few, are singers I've seen live who were capable of giving a virtuousic vocal performance live without any "sweetening" or overdubbing or pre-recorded tracks of any kind.
As for whether I like dance music or not, I have about 300 12" singles and maybe a thousand tracks burned into my home computer of dance music from disco to hip hop to house. I have dozens of mix CDs from friends who have been some of the best and most prominent DJs in the NYC scene of the last 20 years (and I have spent more nights in house clubs than half the people on this board have been alive). I love great dance music with great vocalists (from Donna Summer to Martha Wash, Rachelle Fleming of First Choice, Jocelyn Brown, Deborah Cox, Loleatta Holloway, Kenny O. Bobien, Joi Cardwell, Byron Stingily, Julie McKnight and SO many others), so guess what -- there's no Madonna in my collection.
You and the rest of her millions of fans can have Madonna if you want her -- I'll take any of those folks I just listed (in addition to dozens of Broadway and opera talents I didn't name) who through the sheer force of their MUSICAL talent (not marketing skill) have earned the success they have attained.

Madonna was awesome! She's an incredible all around talent and she certainly doesn't need me or any one else to defend her. She may not be the greatest singer, dancer, actress, or anything else for that matter, that ever lived. But the over all package is what it's all about. How many performers on your list write 95% of their own music? And don't bother launching into a tirade about how much you loathe her music. To each his own. I LOVE it!!! And so do millions of others. And when I go to see someone perform, I'm really not concerned with whether or not their vocals have been "sweetened". What I care about is the overall performance. If all I cared about was flawless vocals I'd stay home and listen to the CD.
