Taylor Swift & Troye Sivan
I always thought They Might Be Giants should write a musical.
Also, I mentioned this in another thread, but I'd love to see Muse write the 1984 rock opera they so clearly want to. I never even liked the band until I listened to "Resistance" and started picturing it as a musical number, and realized they're basically writing a musical.
I don't know how mainstream he is but British rap/r&b artist Plan B. After being introduced to his concept album The Definition of Strickland Banks and the corresponding music videos I thought it might be interesting to see what he would come up with if he focused his talent on the theatre.
FKA Twigs
Oh my God James2 I love you for saying Rebecca Sugar. Steven Universe is amazing.
Kate Bush.

Mainstream artists writing musicals is not a new phenomenon. Take for example Burt Bacharach and his writing the music for Promises, Promises in 1968.
I am generally against pop star "writing" musicals - but...
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Billy Joel
Paul McCartney
Spring to mind...
Mika.
I would like to see a Lady Gaga jukebox musical. Just because her music videos are gorgeous. Imagine seeing paparazzi and bad romance on stage! It would be so cool.
^ You could just go to one of her concerts.
I'll second Kate Bush.
I'd love Boy George and Pet Shop Boys to have another try.
Kate Bush's live shows from last year could be considered musical theatre. "The Ninth Wave" section was very effectively staged around a loose plot of a woman being lost at sea, with dialogue written by Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell.
Randy Newman came close to writing a good musical in "Faust," which certainly had a lot of vocal fans at last summer's Off-Broadway Encores production. There are wonderful songs in the score, but the book doesn't quite hold together. I wish he would write another show.
I think Sia could do anything, even write musical theatre songs. Alanis Morrissette too, maybe. I do think it's positive for musicals to be written by pop artists, not every single Broadway musical has to be a sophisticated, oh-god-please-not-for-the-teenagers musical by a respected, experienced theatre composer.
Elvis Costello who has a way with lyrics.
Someone who could be a hot mess but I'd love to see him attempt it:
Rufus Wrainwright
Older artists:
Carly Simon
Has Dolly Parton attempted a musical yet??
Has Dolly Parton attempted a musical yet???

I think Mr. McCartney could possible write a wonderful score but don't think he could be strong enough lyrically at this stage of his life to advance the story of a 2 1/2 hr Broadway musical.
Not really answering the question, but I'm dying for Dan Harmon to write a musical.

I vote for Alanis, too!!! Her music is very layered, tell great stories, and she has some great melodies.
I also vote for P!nk and not as mainstream but I feel Imogen Heap would bring something amazing to the stage!!

I'd love Florence Welch (from Florence + the Machine) to write a musical set in the 1920's. She did a very good job with her second album, 'Ceremonials', creating lots of atmospheric songs resembling that decade. With a good producer, I think it could work.
Also, Lady Gaga is a very talented woman. Maybe she could write an interesting and contemporary musical... starring herself in the leading role!
Dolly is also supposedly working on a musical based on her life.
Tori Kelly is a really amazing vocalist and song-writer. She could really have the potential to write some great music for a show!
Finding One example of Promises Promises doesn't change one thing. This thread is depressing to me. Is this where musical theatre is heading for the next ten years? Honestly, it makes me ill for the art form.

Pet Shop Boys really should do another. The main issue with Closer to Heaven which I do like is Jonathan Harvey's pretty awful and cliched book which he has essentially disowned They understand the demands of writing for character.
