$27,605,000 - Mamma Mia's opening weekend.
$27,476,745 - Hairspray's opening weekend.
ANOTHER one of these threads?!?
...? These numbers were just released. Did I miss something?
Because anything started by me is always SO MUCH BETTER.

*EDIT: I see now that the thread is on the Off-Topic board.
At least it wasn't a "Dark Knight vs. Mamma Mia" thread, right?

The whole film was a great "forget-your-troubles fun", I loved it, and enjoyed it much although they didn't do the "Under Attack" number.
The cast was great! They made fun of themselves, loved it!
I might go see it again.
I still think "Hairspray" was better, but both movies made it to the TOP 3, and that's great news for musical movies.

A little misleading on the title of the thread
That total is the worldwide gross so far for MM..NOT domestic.

I stand corrected, i just checked out another site too...the other post i read on ANOTHER site was misleading..
That is great news for the movie musical industry.
thanks for the post!
I didn't really care for the movie, but I bet many people will. The tell-tale sign will be what kind of drop it has in box office gross next weekend.
Broadway Mouth: Took a Chance on It: Mamma Mia! on Screen
Although I thought the movie was dreadful (I am going to go and give it a second chance later this week), the full theater in VA Beach was eating it right up. Good to see those numbers...keep the movie musicals coming!
Can somebody explain "weekend" to me? I always thought it included Sunday, but apparently not if the figures for the weekend are released before it's even Sunday afternoon on the West coast. Does the weekend total only include Friday and Saturday?
"Weekend" totals released on Sunday are estimated grosses for Friday and Saturday, and studio projections for Sunday. Actual weekend totals don't come out until Monday afternoon.

For what it's worth the soundtrack was already at #6 (or #7) worldwide--or was it in the U.S--or both?
An update: as of three hours ago it was #1 in the U.K.
From Reuters:
'The sound track to the film "Mamma Mia!", featuring Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Pierce Brosnan, topped the compilations chart and outsold all other albums in the UK during the past week.
More astonishingly, it's already at #2 at Amazon.
Given one c.d. costs as much as two movie tickets in most venues it will be interesting to see how those numbers look.
The last time a soundtrack album outsold all others was seven years ago when music from the film "Bridget Jones" was number one."
(It dropped Cold Play from the top slot like a bad habit and that was sitting their
deeply entrenched for five weeks. This thing is just beginning to find its legs. There was an article ablout a fireman who, with his family, had seen the show 150 times! )

I just hope that when the actual weekend numbers come in it's less than Hairspray opening. I want Hairpsray to remain the biggest musical opening until a worthy film comes along, and that film is not Mamma Mia!
I'm so glad this is doing well. I loved the movie!

Re: Rotten Tomatoes: "Mamma Mia" has already gone over the $100,000,000 mark with combined domestic and international revenues--displaying a similar earnings curve to "The Devil wears Prada" which opened in the U.S. with $27m.
Universal is now looking at a possible $300,000,000 haul for Mamma Mia, independant of any revenues from soundtrack sales and blowback revenues to the
stage productions which could also add up to another $100,00,000.
The "horse race" mentioned by a Universal exec with "The Dark Knight" was simply a bottom line fig: when everything shook out--revenues from theaters and all revenues from all sources spun off by Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight the earnings would be closer between the two than many expected.
The movie theatre in Tampa where I saw it today was nearly full. Of course, I'd say 75% of the people in the theatre went to the movies intending to see The Dark Knight, only to find it sold out. The audience was eating it up with lots of applause and laughter. Nice to see a crowd who was going to see a superhero movie enjoy a movie musical :)
Good for it!
I saw it opening night and yesterday afternoon and both times it was a near seelout
Thats rubbish about Mamma Mia been number 1 in the UK album charts, im here in the UK and listened to the album/Singles charts yesterday and Mamma Mia soundtrack is at number 19

Mamma Mia has also been knocked of the top of the UK box Office by Wall- E

Correction: you're right. it ONLY outsold everything else but one of those curious Bristish Entertainment laws in force by the U.K charting company *(or whoever) prevents it from occupying the # 1 spot--or apparently being in the top-40.
.
No matter. There are no such disqualifiers at Amazon where it is now #1.
Mamma Mia soundtrack is UK's biggest selling album

Add ABBA to MyNME
ABBA have returned to dominance in the UK charts today (July 20) in the wake of their Mamma Mia movie.
The film's soundtrack album was the biggest-selling album, in the UK this week, the first time a soundtrack has outsold all studio albums on the chart since the Bridget Jones soundtrack in 2001.
However, while the soundtrack sold more, chart regulations ensure that in the official albums chart, Basshunter holds the number one position with 'Now You’re Gone'.
The album is in the top 40 so thats rubbish
I saw the movie this past Thursday...and I ENJOYED !!!! It was a fun movie to watch and it was like somebody said earlier it was just a forget your troubles type film and that's what I wanted.

How does one of the worst movies ever made make this much money in two weeks? This movie really is being saved by its foreign distribution.
