Anyway, Tim Minchin has confirmed that there may be a film in a few years.
Plus, there will be a US tour for Matilda:
From http://96fm.com.au//media/audio/310513-TIM-MINCHIN-BEN-FORSTER-FULL-INTERVIEW.mp3:
“...We just got it up in New York, there’s a touring version that is meant to be going on in America, concurrently the English version is up, there’s a film that will probably be made in the next 4 or 5 years and all this sort of stuff.”
If this is true, yay, but good luck to them! "Miracle" and "When I Grow Up" will be very hard to do. I just hope that they keep Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull (I really can't picture a big A-celebrity be Ms. Trunchbull like him).

Doesn't every successful musical have a headline that suggests a film is being made and then nothing happens? The first thing that happens with a potential moneymaker is the optioning of rights.
Unless it's set in stone, it really shouldn't even be reported.

I am surprised they will be doing a US tour before a UK tour, considering Matilda has been open longer in UK and the US.
To be honest, I don't think they should do a movie musical version. I love the musical as it is, but I can't see it working on film.

MATILDA also started up in Stratford before coming to London, so it's at least already played two cities in England. Granted, I know nothing about UK tours in general, but the US touring industry surely is a vastly different enterprise, given geographic factors alone. The timelines between the two continents being different (even varying show to show) wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Nor would this eventually being filmed. The score and story are naturally very cinematic; the Escapologist routines practically beg for the big screen, so it does have a material advantage to actually navigate through studio development in that respect alone.

(Almost) every major musical that has opened on Broadway has had screen rights sold, that doesn't necessarily mean the film will get made.
Some musicals are backed by major motion picture studios with the screen rights as part of the package.
Universal backed the original Broadway production of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and they produced the screen version in 1982. Everyone knows they backed "Wicked" and currently hold the screen rights.
20th Century-Fox bank rolled the original 1975 Broadway production of "The Wiz" and they were originally going to produce the film version, they changed their minds and they sold those rights to Motown Productions who then teamed up with Universal Pictures to co-produce the 1978 film version.
United Artists was a major backer of the 1968 musical, "Promises, Promises" as that show was adapted from their 1960 film, "The Apartment". They held the screen rights to a movie version of the show but it was never made.
There are other examples, but just because a screen version of any given show is "in the works" doesn't necessarily mean it will ever see the light of day.
As with "Les Miserables", "Dreamgirls", "Evita" and "Chicago" their screen versions literally took decades as well as switching studio hands in the process from stage to screen.

Posted: 6/1/13 at 9:43pmA lot of the huge hits here in the UK don't go out on Tour for a long time, Wicked starts it's first ever tour here this year. We are a smaller country so we don't want to harm the show in the West End since people from all over the UK do travel to London to see the big shows.

Posted: 6/2/13 at 2:49pmA film version of Matilda in my opinion needs to be backed by Disney to make any money. I can already see film critics ripping apart the escapologist scenes if put in the film for being distracting...and oh yeah the lack of a plot.....

Posted: 6/2/13 at 6:52pmWhy do shows even tour in Great Britain? It is smaller than New England. Even when you add the other countries that make up the UK it is still smaller than CA. If you toured a show wouldn't you be hurting the London production?
