The big thing that this has to overcome is that it's doing something- parodying musicals and poking fun at musical tropes and conventions- that has been done over and over onstage for a long time now and isn't doing anything particularly new with it (it also is specifically making fun of musicals that are now 60+ years old and no longer even really reflect modern works). At least as a TV series, it had some novelty because of the medium.
I liked Schmigadoon season 1 well enough but thought it really came into its own in season 2, when it started to actively mash up plots and characters in fun and surprising ways. Season 1 was just a straightforward "gee, aren't musicals kinda silly?" romp.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
