I found this on CDNOW.com. It's a children's album. If any of you doubt Meryl Streep's vocal ability, listen to her sing on this. Laura Linney and Patti LuPone have songs on here too!
Meryl Singing
She should have been cast as Norma in the movie version of Sunset Boulevard, that's what she should!
Rent 'Postcards From the Edge' to see and hear Meryl sing.
Hope she plays Desiree on Bway. That would be a hot ticket.
I immediately thought of "Postcards". She has a terrific voice! (And I'd also love to see her as Norma in Sunset).

Broadway theatregoers in 1977 will remember Meryl starring in Brecht & Weill's HAPPY END as "Hallelujah Lil." As such her big solo was "Surabaya Johnny."
Seeing and hearing Meryl starring in a revival of DEAR WORLD, would be much more interesting, in my opinion, than as Norma Desmond in SUNSET.
She also played a wonderful "alice" in Elizabeth Swados' musical "Alice At The Palace" - which is now on DVD. The cast for the show is outstanding including very young stars to be Mark Lynn Baker, Debbie Allen, Michael Jeter and Deborah Rush.

Is she just simply great at everything lol??!! Gotta love her
I can't believe she can sing...what the hell...how come already talented actors can sing well? stop hogging the talent!!
EponineThenardier = genius.
You're so right. It should be Streep.
Rent Alice at the Palace--it's a mixed bag but she's amazing to watch.
Also, in that same series of DVDs, although non-singing, you can see her (and an amazing cast) in Wendy Wasserstein's Uncommon Women.
Oh, I just remembered: She was the star of the musical Songbird in the movie "Death Becomes Her". The scene was hilarious, with people falling asleep, leaving the theatre, complaining out loud etc. The song she sings is called "Me" and is great fun to listen to
I love Meryl as a comedienne best.
Her timing is perfection when she asks Isabella Rossellini "Will you take a check?" :)

And she also sang in the end of the movie "Silkwood", she sings 'Amazing Grace' off-screen in the very end of the film.
She was one of the strongest choices to play Norma Desmond in the original London production of SUNSET BOULEVARD but Patti LuPone got the part after she performed it in ALW's Sydmonton Festival - Streep was allededly in the audience watching LuPone's performance...
Before her movie career really took off in the late 70's she trained with a vocal teacher but hasn't really done any singing roles in public.

She certainly has sung in public. She starred in "Alice at the Palace" at The Public Theatre back in the early 80s (which was then filmed and is now available on DVD).
Please God, Meryl as Mrs. Lovett in the film and as Desiree on stage.

She was once the front-runner to play Evita on film.
Is it true that she actually did some Evita filming at one point?
I would love to see that.

The best I remember it, no. I believe she pulled out at the last minute, citing "exhaustion." My memory's a bit fuzzy, though, as this was well over a decade ago.
Imagine Streep playing Eva Peron.
She'd probably learn to speak perfect Spanish for the role.
EponineThenardier, you took the words right out of my mouth.
I would DIE to see her as Lovett. DIE DIE DIE.
Streep must play Lovett.
She's the best actress alive, as far as I'm concerned, and she can certainly pull off Lovett vocally. She's the best choice for the role, if she wants to do it. Let's hope Mendes has his brain in the right place.
Meryl as mrs. Lovett - talk about great casting! Her "locksmith" would be sensational
