It is an operetta which is a satire on the celebrity cult in those times, likewise set in the Victorian era like THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I've read in the Howard Kissel article on Daily News that the character of Bunthorne was loosely based on Oscar Wilde.
Btw, proceeding from the link given by Kec, I followed the link to the merchandise for Patience. There's a cute one which says :
"LOVESICK MAIDENS" on a fuschia t-shirt.
