Did anybody see Montego Glover go on as either Celie or Nettie in the original production of The Color Purple??

Yes...seen her plenty of times as Celie. She was good (not great) , She was Fantasia;s understudy and so she went on a lot because Fantasia missed over 50 performances during her run in the original production. Seen her on as Nettie twice, I worked at the Broadway theatre back then as a sub.

Thanks for the response! How was she as Nettie? I think she would make a wonderful replacement for that role in the current production.

Did not pay too much attention to her playing Nettie as that role is kind of small...plus at the time, any role seemed small next to Fantasia's Celie, I can say she was okay going on for Darlesia Cearcy who was great in the role. Having seen the original and revival, in my opinion, I don't think Ms. Glover would be good in the newer version in either role.

I am really starting to wonder who they'd get to replace Cynthia and Danielle if the show makes it through the summer + fall. I think their 1 year contracts would expire by then, and I can imagine them both wanting to move on.

Patina Miller is definitely a Shug. But it's a moot point, as she'll be doing MADAM SECRETARY.
I don't know about Danielle but Cynthia is in the show until November, at least.

Danielle Brooks stated in her SAG-AFTRA interview that she signed a year contract. I expect she'll leave when Erivo does.

Amber Riley is doing DREAMGIRLS in London this fall/winter. I doubt replacements will factor into the equation though. The show will probably close when Cynthia leaves. It's not exactly lighting the box office on fire as it is.

Agreed. Don't know any current stars who could sing the role. Brandy would be okay, but not the right voice. And Miller has a certain "stage voice" "fake" quality that I don't think would suite the show at all.

Well, Amber Riley will be doing Dreamgirls in the West End at the time but if the grosses are strong, maybe in the future.

Brandy cannot act worth a lick. Her take on Roxie was embarrasing. Her singing was great but....uh uh.

I can't imagine anyone that could hold a candle to Erivo. Her Celie was one of the best Broadway performances I've ever seen in my 25 year history of seeing Broadway shows.

well, not this past week as Erivo was out for 7 of the shows. We'll see how their sales are with her back this coming week.

The grosses have dropped significantly since Jennifer Hudson left. It's a shame, because the show is better than ever. I imagine today we will see another huge drop this past week, owing to Cynthia's vacation. It will be interesting to see if the show gets a post-Tony boost this week, now that Cynthia will be back for all shows, but I doubt the show will last long once she and Danielle leave.

Their contracts would be up in November, if things pick up based on their Tony win (after this week due to Erivo's absence) I could see them convincing the current leads to stay through the holidays and closing right after New Years.

Not sure what or who the "she's too old" comment for, but if it is for Patina or Manila - you're way off. They would both fit either Shug or Celie's perfectly age wise; and Patina is def more Shug sound quality and looks wise. I agree with folks here, that show will probably wrap up with the current leads leaving. Might even be before that. It won't be an expensive tour to mount if they can get the proper cast lined up.
Amber might have been a good replacement for Sofia. Even without Dreamgirls, something tells me she might not want to be a replacement for a featured role unless this show picks up at Box Office really significantly.

I thought she was surprisingly good. I went in expecting to dislike her, but found her charming and funny.

I believe their contract are 1 year which means they are contracted through Dec. not the fall.

I think Patina wouldn't cut is as Shug. Brandy all the way. She was awsome as Roxy. I think she would make a great Shug since the producers are trying to keep this production kind of young.
