I am seeing Wicked very soon, I should use that to determine if I think he'd be good forFolliesor Next to Normal. I was just going by the fact almost everyone, almost, thinks he'd be good at any movie musical. Except I really did not like In the Heights. but again, probably because of the material. I'd love if Spielberg did Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, but he said no more musicals for him, so, oh well. Plus, yeah, I'm sure people feel that show would be beneath his talents or not the kind of more emotional thing he would do. Well maybe he could lean into the kingdom's poverty or Cinderella and her stepsister getting disowned parts of Beane's book, or someone writes a more emotional book. Anyway, I just looked up Wes Anderson, and really,Georgeanddot2, for Into the Woods?! I have not seenFantastic Mr. Fox, but that is the only film on his filmography that I would wanna see, I did not like his others I have seen!

I mean I do love the multi racial casting (May Whitney RIP), costumes and production design. I wasn’t a big fan of that version because of how The Sweetest Sound and Falling In Love weren’t written by Oscar Hammerstein II. Now that I’m older, I prefer the original broadcast with Julie Andrews."

I think the Brandy version is the best one other than the Beane version. Brandy's is the best of the filmed versions because it is the most entertaining, and yep, the multiracial casting, costumes, and production design are great (plus I love the transformations!). But my favorite is actually the Lesley Ann Warren version, because, while her acting is affected, it is also lively and her emotional scenes are near heartbreaking. I do however like all 4 versions, there is something good in all of them, and yeah, Julie's great and at least that one is all original songs.
"

I understand your mindset. But I’m greatful to Cinderella for introducing me to R+H.

Well no Wes Anderson film made me feel emotional. But hey, I would love to see if his Into the Woods would have been any better.

I finally saw Wicked, and...I would accept Jon directing musicals that fit him and that he wanted to do. The movie was amazing, but I didn't cry. So...sure, he could do other musicals, and maybe he is the best. Maybe Wicked just would never make me cry. His ideas for how to stage and show scenes were so genius, too, but I also didn't feel a near 3 hour split of the films was the way to do any musical.

BwayLB, I am glad you are a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan. They are the classic masters.

I think he would do exceptional work adapting Hadestown.

Yeah, this is why the suggestion of Wes for Into the Woods is utterly baffling to me.  Maybe a stand alone Act I--OK...

What’s the Sondheim show most suited to Jon, or Wes?

That, please.

If you think this, you haven't engaged with his work. I've cried at pretty much every single Wes Anderson film I've ever seen. His whole thing is that 2/3rds of his film will be pretty and funny and the last 3rd is an emotional rug-pull, usually pertaining to the relationships between parents and children. He can conjure tears with a single line. He just doesn't aim for melodrama, which I think is what Into the Woods required.

I think Chu should do The Frogs.

I’d like to see him do Sunset Boulevard with Glenn and Hugh Jackman. He’d make such a beautiful and opulent film.

I assume with Hugh as Norma and Glenn as Max?

Another musical Jon should tackle is Memphis. I mean the evolution of rhythm & blues to rock n roll and the racism of the 50’s just makes an important story. And think of the money being made with David Bryan’s (Bon Jovi) name on a poster.

Regarding other titles that I don't believe have been mentioned here, I also think Chu would be a good fit for Spring Awakening as well as new adaptations of Hair and Rent.

Chu would have made a much better CATS film. He understands musical storytelling better than Hooper and has a much better grasp on how to use technology in filmmaking.

Early in this thread, it was suggested that Jon M. Chu's Asian background might make him ideal to direct ''Miss Saigon.'' I'm not crazy about that idea, or having him redo ''The King and I.'' Let's not recycle Asian stereotypes from the 1950s or 1980s for the 2020s. Chu had expressed interest in maybe directing a Broadway musical of ''Crazy Rich Asians.'' I'd much rather see that, or a contemporary new Asian-American musical written for the screen.

I'd love Jon M. Chu to direct the Miss Saigon film. He seems to understand the importance of letting the songs soar and let them do their work and does not shy away from the non-literal world that this art form on screen needs. He seems to have a good eye for the real story behind characters, their emotions and what drives them. He will understand how important it is to tell their story, what kind of fighters these women were, and not only that, also for the kids that were born out of this situation, and the fact that nobody in this story is a savior or a hero, it is merely a great display of the human mind in the most desperate situation. Miss Saigon is a story of women empowerment, war, survival, love, and the tragedy of life. There are so many aspects he could play with, for example showing that the engineer is actually "Bui Doi", he is not accepted in Bangkok because he does not look asian enough. That's why he feels so attached to Tam, he recognizes himself in that kid. The story is now more relevant than ever. It makes people think about the fact we are all human and what actually matters and what does not.

I think it is very important that this will be sung-through. With most of it pre-recorded, except for little parts in between or the first verse of a song (which was done in Wicked too). It could be a sensational filmic, musical journey which has never been done in this way before. A special director for the action scenes would be a good idea. And a better cinematographer and color grading specialist than Wicked had. Miss Saigon would benefit from the Technicolor look that the West Side Story remake had.

Spielberg would be a great second choice. But I think Chu understand the necessity of casting real singers for the leads, and this art form in general a little more.

Another film I would love to seem him direct is "Aida", the original version indeed. Not the disastrous revival.
