Gaines is so over-rated. Like Esparza was last year

Did you see PASSING STRANGE? Just curious.
It's one thing to disagree about him winning but I think those who truly appreciate the art of musical theatre will agree, he deserved to be nominated.
No question.

Boyd by a MILE.
I saw Passing Strange, and I wasn't overly impressed with Breaker. I thought Colman Domingo should have been nominated over him - he stole the show.

Posted: 6/5/08 at 2:10pmI say Boyd. I LOVED Daniel Breaker in PS, but...I'm rooting for the Gypsy trio to take home the acting awards.

Posted: 6/5/08 at 2:12pmI thought every nominee in this category gave a Tony deserving performance, and I would be thrilled to see any of the five win.

Posted: 6/5/08 at 2:20pmI think that Boyd, Breaker, and Burstein are all deserving of the award. I will, however, be very upset if Boyd doesn't win.
#37re: My Tony Debate: Boyd or Breaker
Posted: 6/5/08 at 2:50pmI kinda think it will be Breaker...although I do think it's an open category at this point. It depends on what the Tonys decide to award...fresh talent (Breaker) or an old Broadway workhorse (Gaines)...I also think DeJesus has a shot.
#38re: My Tony Debate: Boyd or Breaker
Posted: 6/5/08 at 2:58pmI dont think Robin has a shot only because as its been already said if it isnt Boyd or Breaker it would be Burstein. But I think both of them have are more front runners than Burstein. However, Im curious how the drama desks would have gone if Breaker was in the featured catagory. If im correct, Stew wasnt nominated and Breaker was in the leading catagory. I know the winners of the deskies are not nessicarily going to affect who wins the tony but it generally gives you a decent idea of who the front runner is. I still hope Boyd is rewarded for his performance.

Posted: 6/5/08 at 3:25pmI did see Passing Strange and I thought that he gave an over-the-top and uneven performance. In my opinion, the best actor in this show is Eisa Davis. I've seen every Broadway show (both play and musical) this season (with the exception of 4) so I feel that my opinion is well founded.

I despised PASSING STRANGE, but I completely agree that Eisa Davis was the best actor in the show...and she looked fantastic in the purple dress.
That being said, I thought Daniel Breaker's performance was way over the top and painful to sit through. I especially hated when he was carrying those lights and got intertwined in the wires. Horrific. Made no sense at all (at least not to me).
Boyd Gaines should win the award hands down.

When I tell people I hated it, they asked me what it was about and I always say the same thing "about this guy Stew who goes to Amsterdam to have sex and do drugs." Honestly, I have absolutely no clue what went on when I saw that show...
Gypsy, on the other hand, and completely BRILLIANT.

Clearly I did not see the same Passing Strange because I did not see any revelations in that show. I honestly thought Breaker was a tad annoying at times. Boyd or Burstein to win! It'll probably be Boyd and I'm totally fine with that.

^^^ WaT- I totally disagree with you on this one. I thought this was one of the best part of the show. Those lights represent his EGO for me...he used to be so focused on it. The Youth in the Berlin scene is the overload phase in his life. The intertwined wines are emotions or his pains for not letting go...I thought of it as his chip on his shoulders that he can't break away! meaning~all his resentments about being streotype... yes~ that's how I see it....he hated himself since from the begining and the only way for him to untangled all these wires that connect to his EGO is to face his self hatred and move on.
thus the lyrics of the song goes....
PAIN.....EGO.....ART!
of course the music will be harsh to people' ears- its supposed to represents his self hatred. Can you imagine all those years of searching? .drugs (LA) sex (Amsterdam) finally being appreciate for one's race (Berlin) ..only to REALIZE that...those were NOT the things that he was looking for?
I think this is the ultimate message of the show- People who are to expected to act a certain way resents that and try to go into a journey of self discovery...only to find out that the best way to be TRUE SELF is to FIRST examine yourself....and only then you could be liberated from all these wires of emotions and finally create ART that is......true to you!
and the only way to finally finish his song...is to face his inner demons that was binding him all these years~his self hatred...
I find it so poetic!

I haven't seen either performance, but I love Boyd, so can I throw in a vote for him anyway?
#47re: My Tony Debate: Boyd or Breaker
Posted: 6/6/08 at 12:22amI'm not going to say Burstein was bad, but the voters that come out of South Pacific are not going to rave about Billis in this production. I agree that he was terrific, as was the rest of the cast, but with such powerhouse leads like O'Hara and Szot, the supporting cast who turn in uniformly brilliant performances will be overlooked. Matthew Morrison and Li Jun Li are both deserving of nominations, and they were overlooked. This is why Breaker will get the Tony. His role is the most eye-catching, and I think most deserving of a Tony as well.

Hands down, this one belongs to Breaker. We saw both shows this past weekend. I thought that Boyd was excellent as Herbie. He really brought things to the role that I hadn't seen before. However, Breaker was completely electrifying. Throughout the show, I couldn't take my eyes off of him. By the last scene he was literally in tears, and the whole audience was in the palm of his hand. I don't know how he can NOT win the Tony.
The scene with the electric wires confounded some of you because it didn't fit within the constraints of a normal Broadway musical. That scene for me was beautiful and haunting. There were no easy explanations, and I love that in a piece of art.

Both are very good actors, but I have to give it to Daniel Breaker. Breaker's transformation from boy to teen to "man" to adult is effortless and honest, and seeing the second time recently only reinforces my opinion that he gives one of the best male performances of the year.
Boyd, on the other hand, does a great job, but can only go so far, as the production falters under the lazy direction of Laurents, who has everyone express emotion by yelling it so loudly they can hear it in the Hayes.
