It's a no-brainer! "

Agreed. It's such a fun show, and people would tune in with the name recognition. Bye Bye Birdie with a pop star as Birdie would be a second choice.

I'm a little surprised you put Once Upon a Mattress on your list of musicals that they wouldn't do. It has been filmed three times for television in the past. The last time being a full decade ago. Peter Pan was filmed last year and that was the fifth time that has been filmed for TV. The history of Once Upon a Mattress is incredibly comparable to Styne and Charlap's Peter Pan. So, why is it that you think that NBC would never choose to film this? The precedent seems as if it is already set.

"

But Peter Pan has far more name recognition than Once Upon A Mattress, which is incredibly important for pulling in viewers. If you surveyed average non-theatre going families who watch these live musical broadcasts, almost all of them would be familiar with Peter Pan (even if not the musical adaption, but the story in general) but would likely have never heard of OUAM.

I would love to see How To Succeed or Cabaret, but those probably fall into the pool of shows with little name recognition as well.

They should do ZORBA with the City Center cast.

Didn't PBS/Lincoln Center already do that with Gabriel Byrne, Marin Mazzie, Nathan Gunn, Bobby Steggert and Fran Drescher?

My mom said she would rather have NBC do a recent musical like "The Addams Family" because the first two made her feel old. But "The Music Man" is most likely gonna be next,

My cast...

Harold Hill - Zachary Levi

Marion Paroo - Kristin Bell

Marcellus Washburn - Christian Borle

Mayor George Shinn - Kelsey Grammer

Eulalie MacKechnie Shinn - Megan Mullally

Mrs. Paroo - Faith Prince

I would have open casting calls for Tommy Djilas, Zaneeta Shinn and Winthrop Paroo

"If this tradition continues, despite as bad as theater fans my want it, NBC isn't going to run out and stage a show that the general public has zero or very little familiarity with."

They greenlit Smash. I wouldn't put anything past them. I think they need to figure out the difference between family friendly and for children. The Sound of Music was family friendly. Peter Pan was primarily for a young audience that could not watch in the fall on a school night. Disney/ABC wouldn't do it because Aladdin and The Lion King are still running and they've got their Beauty and the Beast movie coming out and who knows what else in the works but they have the ideal shows for something like this.

"I would like to see them ruin Camelot."

Since we know they don't care about hiring the right talent that would be tedious as hell. That score sung poorly? I don't think I could even hate watch that. I'd fall asleep.

I think if they cast it correctly, they should do Pippin. But they need to trust the source material too (they mostly trusted Sound of Music, but couldn't keep their hands of Peter Pan or The Wiz). But again, they don't seem to know how to cast these things, which is a significant contributor to the failures.

^Craig Zadan & Neil Meron are already gonna be producing a feature film adaptation of Pippin for Harvey Weinstein.

I think it's going to be The Music Man as well. My dream cast -

Harold Hill: Seth MacFarlane

Marian: Laura Benanti, Kristen Bell, maybe Megan Hilty?

Marcellus: Josh Gad

Mrs. Paroo: Emma Thompson

And then any 2 big names for the Shinns

Is that possible? It is already so boring to get through.

Disney has other musicals in their catalog. I know a new movie is coming out, mary poppins would be nice. Also the little mermaid and Tarzan. And maybe they can test frozen or tangled out on television before they get to Broadway.

I can see ABC doing "The Little Mermaid" heck I think they should also do "Beauty and the Beast" because none of the songs that were written for the Broadway show are going to be used in the new film. If they do it this could be the occasion to use them.

The way Zadan and Meron announced how after the Wiz they will go on Bombshell, I feel that The Wiz might be the last live musical for NBC, unless the duo will be taking a break next year.

My Fair Lady...?

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. as much as I like to see both happening My Fair Lady & Oliver! will never happen because of Cameron Mackintosh. Also Oliver is going to go back to the big screen next year.

White Christmas would have been wonderful

One the reasons that I am loosing interest, and I think here is the major problem, is the selection of musicals they are going for.

I enjoyed Peter Pan, all right, but the Sound of Music could have had great follow ups such as Fiddler on the Roof Live, White Christmas, A Christmas Carol to name just a few. They should have known that some people are going to be annoyed watching Peter Pan flying with visible wires. Last but not least, why go for lesser known titles, when they are so many well known shows that could have turned into a good live television musical? And not to put aside the fact that both Pan and Wiz were not the length of time they needed; so to top it all both shows had to be toyed with, which led to another issue which did not go well with viewers.

Reading between the lines about going to Bombshell from The Wiz, it means that they are giving up on live shows. Not sure if NBC will continue without Meron and Zadan.

^They probably couldn't have done Fiddler on the Roof because of the Broadway revival that was in development, and is now getting ready to start performances this Friday.

Also keep in mind that Zadan & Meron did spend the last three years producing the Oscars while they also had their live musicals in the works at NBC.

Jeffrey, Fiddler on the Roof was just an eg. And still I do not think that by also producing the Oscars is a good excuse to select a lesser known title.

^What I meant was that they've had several projects in the works at the same time before. So it is possible that they could still produce another live musical next year.

I hope they do something that has NEVER had a tv production or a POPULAR movie adaption. This year's The Wiz was a great choice since the movie was nothing like the broadway version. The Music Man already has a movie and a tv version. Why would you want another one? Something new please!

misunderstanding Jeffrey, and yes I hope they will be able to do another one.

I also hope its not the Music Man, since it was already done. But I guess we have to wait and see.
