If this hasn't already been announced somewhere that I've missed, I'm betting this is a done deal.
Now being reported by Variety as well.

Not sure if you're serious, Cats, but he hosted four times, which I think is as many as anyone has in recent memory, with the exception of Angela Lansbury (who, I think, may have hosted or co-hosted five times).
In any case, there's no question the Oscar prestige and viewership nationally and internationally is higher. Seems like a very reasonable and logical choice on his part at this stage of his career.
Great choice and I'm sure he'll be wonderful. I actually think he's a better host/celebrity than he is actor. Another Tony hosting gig does seem slightly less likely now. I hope that's not the case. I think he's the best host the Tonys has ever had and I certainly hope he'll spare us from another year of the painfully earnest, overdone Hugh Jackman. Maybe Nathan can return??

Ugh... he just needs to go away for a while... way too overexposed. He is getting tiresome.

Deena, getting tired? I was tired of him from the first second I saw him on HIMYM (he was good in Dr. Horrible, though that musical not so much; as for Assassins, I cannot say as I have no interest in hearing another Sondheim score)
Yawn.
Too bad Julia Louis-Dreyfus turned down the gig. That could have been magic.
Somebody needs to tell This guy that he really needs to go away for a while. He is becoming tired very quickly.
Best host out there now. They couldn't have done better.
I had literally been waiting a long time for this, and I am so glad that it's finally happening!
As for whether or not he should return to hosting the Tonys, if I were him, I'd personally take another year off and return for the 70th anniversary, knowing that hosting the Oscars is quite a BIG commitment...
But in any case, he'll at least get show off his hosting skills to his largest audience yet!
Couldn't have done better? Billy Crystal has something to say about that.
"Couldn't have done better? Billy Crystal has something to say about that."
I have to imagine that whenever Crystal isn't hosting, it means he told them he wouldn't host.
A choice devoid of imagination but neither surprising nor especially exciting. Likely to be his final hosting gig for a while, it's an inevitability if a tad early. (That's the biz: "If he can do that, he can do this!") I am alone in thinking it's become the most thankless job in show business, because unlike the Tonys, the Oscars has little entertainment value anymore. The longest night of the year. He'll do a big opening number, meta-hosting duties sent up campily; he'll do some cute GONE GIRL routine which we can't discuss because it will be a spoiler; by February, the whole world will have those SAW worthy images in their brains.
Billy Crystal wasn't particularly good the last time he hosted. NPH appeals to people of all ages, all sexual orientations, and both genders. He is a perfect host.

He also produces the show. Wondering if that has anything to do with it.

I'd still love to see Laura Benanti host the Tony's. She was sooo funny hosting the Drama Desks! I really hope they go with someone new this year! As for NPH, he's a great host but really?? Is he really the only person out there who would do a good job hosting?

Yay! Can't wait! Seriously, some of you make it sound like he is the only one who hosts...sure he hosts a lot of awards shows, but that's because he's good at it!
Ellen, Amy Phoeler and Tina Fey, and Melissa McCarthy are the only other people I would be interested in seeing host...

It wouldn't surprise me if NPH declines hosting the Tonys, CBS will likely try and get Stephen Colbert or James Corden to host, with Colbert taking over the Late Show next year, it would be a good way for CBS to promote their new guy and Corden has hosted award shows and is a capable presenter

Based on... what? He just won a Tony and was responsible for Hedwig becoming the hot ticket on Broadway until his departure. His Tony-hosting gigs have been extremely well-received by everyone that isn't a member of this board. He has a book coming out this week that is has a lot of hype. He's a featured actor in a very much talked about film. His very popular television series just ended.
He may be physically exhausted, but come on- he's never been more popular.
Yes, he should go away while he is reaching a career peak, that's a great idea! Jay G2 should be an agent.
Add me to those who think this is pretty perfect and really something inevitable given how he has turned into a personality more than just a working actor like he used to be. And sorry but Billy Crystal was terrible last time he hosted. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are definitely my top choice, but they've said it's a thankless job (which it is, and even Neil Patrick Harris said that earlier this year...guess he changed his mind) and won't do it. Harris is a showman like few today--probably Hugh Jackman is the only person who comes to mind--and he'll do a fantastic job as he has with the Tony Awards and the Emmys. I do wish he wasn't in one of the films that'll garner a few nods this year but whatever.

He should go for the world's first EGOT host.
