NYC Hotel prices — Page 2

On my last trip I stayed at the Citizen M - across from the Wintergarden and paid about $90 a night. And that was on a weekend. It was a fun hotel but not a high school trip kind of hotel. I’d recommend the Row for its location.

All the rooms I’ve stayed in are tiny but it’s NYC.

Look into Hotels Tonight or Kayak. You can find some decent deals.

Yeah, like 15 years ago you stayed at the Gansevoort for $100 a night on a Tuesday in January. That's not a reality now and especially next Spring.

Actually it was the first weekend of September in 2017 that I got the Ganesvoort. I know this because I was assistant directing a show at the public and I had 2 nights that I couldn’t be in my sublet. Instead of sleeping on the couch I decided to get a hotel and got the Ganesvoort. That’s why Hotwire is awesome, you get great deals BECAUSE you don’t know what hotel you’re getting. Period.

Resort fees are a real shocker and often they are hard to even see until it's time for check-out.

I cannot believe people are actually recommending the Row. I have tried the Row many, many times because it is the absolute perfect location. However, every single time I have stayed there, I had to wait in an endless line to check in, and then the staff was almost comically rude, like one of those themed restaurants where the waiters are trained to be saucy and sassy with the customers. It is so bizarre.

Then the elevators. THE ROW ELEVATORS WOW. Just wow. You need to factor in an extra 20 minutes if you need to get somewhere because that is how long it will take you to use the elevators. You have a show at 8 and it's 7:30 and you just want to drop off some shopping bags in your room? Think again. You'll never make it.

Then the worst part is the checking out. Often when I check out, I have them hold my bags because I don't always fly out in the mornings. Any other hotel, I just walk in, show the front desk my claim check and I have my bags in minutes. The Row? Try an hour, hour and a half. And people cut the line, ignore the line. The guy goes in the back to find bags and doesn't come back for 15, 20 minutes. It is really something else.

And add on to all of this: resort fees! Yes The Row has the nerve to charge resort fees! What's the resort? Well, 8th Avenue of course!

I'm returning to New York in October and December and I have yet to find reasonably priced rooms. When I am especially low on funds, I stay at the Gallivant or the Mayfair. Neither of them are comfortable but they both offer a quiet room with a bed and a bathroom.

My preferred hotels in terms of price, proximity to Broadway and comfort: Westin on 43rd/8, or Hilton Garden Inn on 8th/48. Hilton Garden Inn is more likely to be reasonable, and by reasonable I mean under $275 a night and NO RESORT FEE.

Watch out for hotels with "Times Square" in their names because often they are as far away as 5th Avenue, 36th Street, etc. You'd think "Times Square South" means something like 41st and 7th. No. It means 33rd and 9th.

Now if the OP is talking about a group rate, I agree with Hogan that there is no reason to ask about that on this board because even if one of us said that a particular hotel had a good rate, there is no way to guarantee you would get anything near that rate or that the hotel will even be open.

When I brought students to NYC, we always took a coach bus so we stayed in Jersey and I was able to save tons of money. We just took the coach bus into the city each day.

I know the Row can be a nightmare at check in and to check bags. Same for Yotel. That’s why I never spend the day in a city on the day I’m leaving. I get early flights and use in room check out or key drop boxes in the lobby.

Also, I utilize self check in whenever I can. Yotel offers this. I’m unsure if Row does now. Many hotels do. I try to avoid the desk as much as possible if I can.

I’ve never had a problem at the Row or Yotel.

I will tell folks to avoid The Cachet Hotel (formerly Out Hotel). You can often get super cheap deals from them on third party websites and really cheap rates (I once got $50 a night and it was rated three stars) on blind booking sites. It looks fantastic online but it’s truly filthy, in disrepair and at the time most of the rooms shared a wall with the Playboy Club (which is now closed) so the walls vibrate from club music all night. I don’t know if a new dance club has moved in. They advertise free breakfast but they notoriously have the room locked due to “mechanical issues.” They also place charges on cards for eating mini bar food that is covered in dust that any sane person wouldn’t dare touch. See the reviews. Atrocious. No matter how good a deal you score, don’t do it.

We do a fri-sun trip, we have 2 group dinners, bfast at the hotel included. We also do 3 touristy things (museums, historic, trendy) 3 bway shows (sometimes 1 of those is off bway), an improv club and classes with bway professionals.

The cost is under nine hundred (or was 2 years ago -I don't yet have a price for this year)...so you might have to increase your estimate.
