NYC Hotel prices

My granddaughter's high school is planning a trip to NYC this spring and she and I were talking about the over-all cost of the trip. She was wondering what the average nightly cost of a hotel room is like in NYC. I figured that under normal conditions it would be roughly $100/night but they'd be getting a group rate.

How far off am I?

By about $200 if they are staying in Midtown. Spring in NYC where things will be back to normal? Rooms will be very, very expensive.

Very far. A $100 room is possible....... But it would be in a hotel that you wouldn't want her staying in.

I would think, just from my checking in the past, that normally it would be $150.00 to 200.00 a night, depending. I just looked at a popular hotel in the Times Square that I know does a lot of groups and those were the rates for the spring. But a lot of others can run 200.00 plus.

My friends booked a week in NYC for next March and it's $379 per night in Midtown.

Not true but may be somewhat true considering they’re a group. I’ve stayed in many nice hotels in NYC for $100 a night (before resort fees added in). I’ve stayed at The Bowery, The Roxy, Gaansvort, Soho Grand, The Roger…. All for $100 a night. Last minute trips on Hotwire. You don’t know what hotel you’re staying at, but put in “4 stars or higher” and “boutique” and pick neighborhoods not in Midtown and you can get amazing hotels for a fraction of the cost.

What was the price after the resort fees.....because that is part of the actual price. When I have looked for trips in the past the room rate was $100 but the resort fee added another $150 per night...making the nightly rate $250 plus taxes. If there is a possibility of a great room in Midtown for $100 a night with very minimal resort fees I might rethink my plan of not returning.

I'm staying at the Row NYC for my trip next month, and it was <$150 per night. I was pleasantly surprised.

For what it's worth, on my trip last week, I stayed at the Row (fine hotel, terrible elevators) and it was less than a $100/night. and I also stayed at the Washington Jefferson for less than $100.

But, back in, oh, 2008, I came with my high school and we stayed at the Row, so if you're thinking people are sharing rooms, etc, it can be done affordably.

Yeah, like 15 years ago you stayed at the Gansevoort for $100 a night on a Tuesday in January. That's not a reality now and especially next Spring.

Prices for nice hotels and not ****holes (like these people are describing) will cost ya. Period.

Personally, I quite like the Row. It isn't the fanciest hotel in the world, but it also isn't a hellhole (unfortunately I've stayed in my share of those), and it gets the job done.

When I went on my high school trip back in the day, it was normal for 4 students to share 1 hotel room (2 double beds.) Is that still the norm nowadays?

This is the wrong site on which to ask this question as evidenced by the fact that most of the folks responding have no idea what they are talking about. I have a friend/colleague who has been here about 10 times this year including week before last, 2 weeks before that, and next week. He has never paid as much as $100, and he stay in one of 2 smaller places in the west 40s that are very nice. This is NYC. If you want to pay someone $300, they will take your money. Wanna pay $3000 a night; there are a bunch of choices. But that does not seem to be what the OP is after. Maybe check tripadvisor, hotels.com, etc. Will prices be higher in the Spring? Maybe; it depends, but best to look elsewhere for meaningful guidance.

Your friend must enjoy shared baths and dorm style sleeping. Not my thing. No way he is getting "very nice rooms" in the west 40's for lower than a $100. Then name names and add address for validity. Or is he on the down low.

I bring hs kids to NY every year (well, pre-covid), no way do we get rooms that cheap. Ever.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

@ArtMan Nope. Very nice rooms. I was in one of them. I'll message you the name. Please don't post it here. As to the rest, I stand by what I said. I will add one thing, however. I am talking about 2021, not 2019. I can confirm what dramamama said about historical rates prior to covid. I have no idea what rates are being offered in Spring '22 although I think Sutton's fantasyland about this booming Broadway tourism in the Spring is what's driving their mis-information campaign on this subject.

I've been shopping for hotel rates for several fall NYC weekends (Fri-Mon or Sat-Tues) at a variety of Midtown properties and all of the rates are averaging $100 higher than what I last booked in 2019.

Rates certainly drop once you move to neighborhoods farther out, but for business reasons I need to stay in the Midtown area.

$200 has been the typical lowest price for a property associated with any of the reputable brands.

Folks need to get themselves on all the NYC tourist trap hotel email lists (Row, Yotel,etc) and you will get emails for insane deals. Yes these aren’t the Ritz but they are just fine. Clean, safe and modern with nice staff and guests. Row just sent an email and friends got rooms a week before Christmas for $179. They have a discount running until March and rooms as low as $77 a night. Even with the fees it was 510 for 4 nights in Feb.

It depends on a lot - specific dates? Weekend included? Neighborhood? Sharing rooms and want double beds or other?

I just picked a random school week M-F in March, 4 days no weekend nights, and stuck around Theater District assuming that’s the reason they’re coming - $150-160/night after taxes and fees at places like Roxy, The Manhattan, The Moxy. Decent to fine hotels that will impress you with photos of their lobby and staged rooms but where it’s a little bit of roulette as the the quality of the actual room.

One of my first trips to NYC for work, well before I moved here, I stayed in The Roosevelt, one of the grandest and most impressive lobbies I’d seen…. Absolutely worst and most disgusting room experience ever. I think they were renovating but I clearly got a room they hadn’t gotten to yet!

On my last trip I stayed at the Citizen M - across from the Wintergarden and paid about $90 a night. And that was on a weekend. It was a fun hotel but not a high school trip kind of hotel. I’d recommend the Row for its location.

All the rooms I’ve stayed in are tiny but it’s NYC.

Look into Hotels Tonight or Kayak. You can find some decent deals.
