It has to be Cats...ALW owes me 2 hours of my life back (seemed like 10 hours).

Who said StEx? It's not that bad. It has a couple of good songs, and if you have a good Electra your afternoon/evening is not wasted.

I agree with Via & to see it was indescribable
I also agree with Cats who one critic described as a feeling akin to "having a cat pee on you for 2 hours plus"

Most of this thread has been pretty good about it, but I really don't see the point of telling someone that they're "on crack" or that their post is "idiotic". This is a message board, a place of opinion, and insulting someone isn't going to have any effect on whether or not they like a certain show or song. Polite discussion of why or why not they like it? Sure. But just saying they suck is pretty much banging your head against a brick wall.

You should qualify this in that you actually had to SEE the show, not make snap judgments. So in my case....
Remember the book they made you read in high school about a mental challenged man and a mouse? "Flowers for Algernon"? In 1980 they made it into a musical. It was called "Charlie and Algernon". I saw it at the Kennedy Center in DC on it's pre broadway tryout.
Imagine a man dancing with a mouse in his hand, singing to it. At The show I saw, the mouse peeded in PJ Benjamins hand during his big number. Even the mouse knew this was crap. Ran 17 performances on Broadway.

1991's NICK & NORA was the worst musical I have seen in over 55 years of theatregoing. The fault was in the book by Arthur Laurents. A musical mystery based on "The Thin Man" movie characters, I didn't care who done it; I just wanted it to be over. The people I went with left at intermission. I stayed hoping for some improvement in the 2nd act, but it was not to be. This was a case of the director(Arthur Laurents) not seeing the problems of the author(Arthur Laurents). As for the score by Charles Strouse and Richard Maltby, Jr., it was best left forgotten. What a mess! The only lucky person in the theatre was the person who was killed early in the first act--at least they didn't have to stay on stage for very long.
As for LI'L ABNER, I saw the OBC production in the 1950's and loved it. The acting, score, hilarious book and terrific choreography by the famous Michael Kidd kept this show running for 693 performances. It deserves a revival, with the right director and choreographer.

RE: CHARLIE AND ALGERNON
Didn't THE WOMAN IN WHITE also have a character singing and dancing with a mouse in his hand? And if I remember correctly, there were some rather wet moments...
I didn't see either show so I'm not speaking of either of them as the worst musical ever. I'm just commenting on some similarities.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I've only seen one musical which i REALLY couldn't stand: Aida

Maybe not the worst musical ever, but Dr. Doolittle on tour was pretty awful.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Liverpool, the "terribleness" of Gutenberg, the Musical! is purposeful. That's where the comedy lies. The terrible lyrics, the purposeless songs, the one-dimensional characters... I laughed harder at Gutenberg than I have in a long time. Unless, of course, you know all this and the comedy just wasn't up your alley.

Sorry if someone already corrected this error...
But JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD most certainly does count as a musical. It even won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. (For some unknown reason.)
However, I completely agree that it should be on this "worst musicals" list.
More:
LEGS DIAMOND
CHU CHEM
SUNSET BOULEVARD
MAIL
THE GOODBYE GIRL

The worst? Of all the shows I have seen it would be a toss-up between Starlight express and Sunset Boulevard. I didn't see it in New York but last summer I saw Bombay Dreams and even though I went as someone's guest I was still overcharged.
