Songanddanceman,
I also really enjoyed Legs Diamond. Julie Wilson was so wonderful in that. And I really enjoyed the music! The dancing was also top notch. I remember there was one rather nasty critic who commented that it had the ugliest chorus on Broadway. That's just mean. Don't get me wrong, Peter Allen was hillariously gay as a gangster, but it wasn't a train wreck of a show by any means.

I replied earlier that Cats was my choice, and while I stand by that, I need to mention an obscure show I was 'fortunate' to catch in previews, called A Broadway Musical. I was in a theater class in high school in 1978, and our class went to this show. It was absolutely awful, and rightfully closed after opening night. Fortunately for everyone else, it didn't run forever like Cats did. As awful as it was (and it was terrible), to this day the tune of title number sometimes slips into my mind, much to my regret.

Fame on 42nd street is Fame the musical, one of the most profitable west end shows of all time.It ran for 10 years in London and is out on its 5th or 6th UK tour, and the show is a massive worldwide hit,its only in the US where the show hassn't worked.

"Whistle Down the Wind"
I saw this in London. It was a tough musical to sit through. There are some problems such as they couldn't decide which Act 1 ending to use so they included both: "Children Rule the World" and "No Matter What". And obviously they put in the "Annie Christmas" song just to fake the audience into thinking that they didn't have two Act 1 endings. "Annie Christmas" has absolutely no purpose or meaning to the show.

These are IMO of course:
The Phantom of the Opera
Tarzan
Mama Mia!
Brooklyn
The Lion King
Aida
Follies
Stomp and Slava's Snow Show (off-broadway, and although they aren't really musicals, they are BAD)
And these aren't bad but I just don't like them:
RENT
Wicked
Les Miz
Chicago (revival)
The Color Purple
The Phantom of the Opera
Tarzan
Mama Mia!

The Lion King
Aida

I'd say Silence of the Lambs, but wasn't that supposed to suck?

I'm probably gonna get shot for saying this, but Mamma Mia. Granted, I LOVE the music of ABBA, but the storyline is so soap opera-esque it was ridiculous.

Did someone already mention The Prince of Central Park.
Putrid!
And Joanne Worley tried so hard.

okay, I love Woman in White and Hot Feet, but I will say that I couldn't stand Good Vibrations. Or Brooklyn. Movin' Out wasn't too high on my list either.
I did enjoy Kevin Anderson in Brooklyn though. :)

I can remember so many others now-
Roza - Hal Prince's darkest moment
Any of the Tango Argentinas (do they count?)
The Chosen - (off bway, but so bad it makes the list anyway)
And one total disaster that I have always adored - Welcome To The Club (or any of the other 10 titles the show went by during development)

Enjolras - I actually saw a video of the original production of Moby Dick. The biggest failing was the second act, which got very tedious (with the exception of the whale, it seems they ran out of steam in the creative department, and the show basically repeated itself) but the first act was absolutely brilliant. The show is intentional camp, much like the Broadway production of Urinetown, and it relied heavily on the visual aspect, staging, and performances, which cannot be captured on an audio recording.

One Night Stand. How appropriate. It closed in previews.
Home Sweet Homer. Yul's sorriest moment. It closed on opening night.
These were beyond bad, and had real talents involved on stage and on the creative teams.

ugh UGH, Follies- an arrow through the heart right there.
Either Brooklyn or Mamma Mia for me. Both pretty dismal times in the theater.

I just remembered....the musical about the aftermath of Hiroshima was called Out of the Blue. Awful!
I do find some people's idea of the "worst musical" quite amusing. Those who listed Rent, The Lion King, Mamma Mia, Cats or Phantom of the Opera surely never had to sit through Notre Dame de Paris. Maybe they are members of VAGINAS. Whatever.
And what on earth could have been so bad about Urinetown that it would be categorized as the WORST? It is by far one of the most creative, original and hysterical musicals I've ever seen. Maybe they just saw a bad production or something. I mean, I totally get differences of opinion, but we're talking THE WORST. C'mon...

OH PULEEZE HIFI was a terrific evening of theatre. I totally enjoyed it. I thought that the conflict resolution bit was brilliant. I also thought that Rachel Stern doing She Goes was a total hoot. I still can't understand why that show didn't make it, other than the fact that there was absolutely no buzz about it, no ads, no promo at all.

Ok, whoever dissed Parade needs to reexamine his tastes in musicals because that show has one of the best damn scores ever!!!!! Just because the subject matter is unorthodox doesn't mean a show is terrible.
