Is it just me or does anyone else find NPH the most vanilla, homogenized white bread host ever. I'm not saying he's not a talented man, but I find him a snoozefest. No edge.
Full agreement here.

"Who wouldn't love to see Liza host?! It would be...amazing."
I would love to see Liza hosting, but as Lucille Austero, with Jessica Walter popping in as Lucille Bluth.
Liza would be a stumbling srunk mess and probably fall off of the stage.
Joan Rivers would be AWESOME!!! Now THAT would be great for ratings. But unfortunately, the people at home would miss half of her commentary.........
"I would love to see Liza hosting, but as Lucille Austero, with Jessica Walter popping in as Lucille Bluth."
Screw that, just have Jessica Walter host as either Lucille Booth or, better yet, Mallory Archer. Instead of announcing the winners, she can take shots at the losers and each award will take on a survivor format!
I don't think a host makes any bit of difference to who turn in to the show. You could put my absolute favorite performer to host the Country Music Awards and I still wouldn't tune in. Why? Because I don't follow or care about the Country Music industry and its awards. I wouldn't know ANYTHING about what was going on at all -- I simply wouldn't waste my time.
MOST theater goers only see one or maybe two shows a year -- they have no real interest in all the rest. There will only ever BE a limited interest in the awards show.
Me, I live for Tony night -- and DO worry about networks giving up on it though.
Isn't Rosie filling Oprah's slot on ABC in the fall? This would not only be a great PR move, but she would draw attention in, if she hosted.
I don't think the host necessarily needs to be a comedian or a funny person, per se. The best host I can remember was Angela Landsbury. She had a genuine quality about her. When she introduced performances it didn't sound like she was reading a script--it sounded like she was proud to introduce you to performance of a show she loved a by performers she respected. Her monologues talked about her love of theatre and her history as a performer. I remember one year where she wore the Mama Rose red dress and sang Everything's Coming Up Roses. She such a delightful woman.
Rather than making NPH sound funny, they should have him talk about how he got turned on to theatre (he was initially known as a TV actor), his experiences and his respect for the people he works with.
An awards show is not a comedy show. You don't have to make me laugh. But please, entertain me. Make me smile.
What really needs to change is woman who does the voice-overs. no matter who the host is she can make a good show a dull show with her dreary delivery. PLEASE change!

Not a fan of of NPH...and said as much the first time he hosted. Thought he was getting way too full of himself then and my opinion hasn't changed.
Seeing "Company" next month in spite of him, not because of him.
I'm just sitting here smiling that an openly gay young actor is being referred to as "the most vanilla, homogenized white bread host ever."
We've come a long way, baby!
Stephen Colbert would have been an amazing choice.

I thought I was the only one.

Agreed so hard.
NPH doesn't bug me. But, he's a terrible singer. The whole Oscars performance was beyond bad. I say let him host, but stop him from singing at all costs.
You want ratings? Let Charlie Sheen host.

Jeffrey Sewell should host, or at least be a presenter.
Bette Midler did some stand-up waaaaayyy back in the start of her career.
The Divine Miss M has NEVER done stand-up in her entire career. Not at any point in her long career.
As the consummate entertainer, she has honed her gift of the gab and command of a stage. On countless TV appearances (including the several TV Specials she did in the 1970's), she has done her gabbing on a mic stand but this was NOT stand-up in any way shape-or-form. Its her gabbing schtick which is part of her persona, etc.

THAT, my friend... is a recording of her 1985 cabaret show which contained both her gabbing AND musical bits (with Marc Shaiman doing the piano accompaniment).
If you consider this stand-up, then countless cabaret performers are unknowingly doing stand-up comedy shows in numerous venues whenever they tell a story in their act.

I'm very excited! I love NPH!
I think NPH is good but not GREAT.
Someone like Rosie or Kathy would be amazing. I think Kathy Griffin would be a very appropriate choice to host after the year she has had.
Whoopi and Bette would have been Divine.
They could have touted their own shows.
Actually Divine would have been Divine but he's dead
Chris Rock and Robin Williams would have been a hoot.
Or how bout Daniel Radcliffe and Aaron Tveit who have so much in common..
both leading a show almost singlehandedly and getting no respect.
NPH is the best they can do?
There were so many interesting ways to go this year.
Edie Falco and Ben Stiller.
Jerry Herman and Steven Schwartz
Harvey Fierstein and Christober Siebert
Harvey Fierstein and Robin Williams..
NPH Huh?

I think the producers main goal is to avoid any negative surprises. NPH with all the years in TV and on stage is more reliable than most potential hosts and will automatically be where he's supposed to be during a live broadcast. Also, he's willing to rehearse and to put up with sitting or standing around for a long, long time. Most stand-up comedians are very weak at standing around patiently.
