The show was a downer - this highlights were 5 memorials. NPH, who I really like, looked sooo uncomfortable. The 'awards' previously given for supporting actor/acrtess on a comedy (Leo/Newhart) was wierd with Leo coming out to present and Newhart coming later.
Uneven, unfunny. Made it 35 minutes.

Posted: 9/23/13 at 12:58pmYou have to draw the line somewhere, I guess. But I agree... Wonder why Klugman and Hagman got the short straw and Moneith gets a 5-minute tribute. Makes no sense.

Posted: 9/23/13 at 1:38pmi thought NPH was good, not great. but its not really fair to complain that he/it was boring when at the same time complaining Seth McPharlan or Ricky Gervais were too cutting edge as was discussed like crazy back when they made the announcement

NPH was credited as one of the producers.
I only saw the last 40 minutes, but caught Steve Levitan's (Modern Family)diss of the program.

"NPH was credited as one of the producers."
He has been credited as a producer on all Awards Shows he has hosted for the past two years. He was also producer on the Tonys. Pretty sure that's just a required formality to ensure his level of involvement is recognized throughout the stages of planning and development. Don't read into that too much.

I know. And that's the saddest realization of all, Jane. RIP Klugman.

Why didn't they Get Bruce!?
I don't think they avoided Klugman or Hagman because they were aiming for the youth market. Jean Stapleton and Meathead have no relevance to that cohort.
Not singling out Hagman is particularly egregious, when you consider the international cultural phenomenon his JR character was. Arguably one of the most famous television characters of all time.

I think it was on the Today show this morning where I saw a discussion on this and the reason given was that although Klugman had the history on tv and the awards, and Monteith had no tv history and took his own life, he was chosen to Memorialize because he attracted a huge younger audience.

I think it's because Cory was much more culturally relevant than Jack Klugman in 2013. I also think they wanted a PSA on addiction. I doubt it has anything to do with ratings considering it was less than five minutes and people aren't known to watch award shows just for the tributes and memoriams. I don't think Cory should have chosen over someone who has won Emmy Awards and had a 50 year resume, though.
Those tribute were boring, it would have been nice to see clips of the people they were talking about.

Son, it was because the youth of today related to Monteith on Glee, a show that the youth of today watches.
btw, are you related to Sue Storm?

"Son, it was because the youth of today related to Monteith on Glee, a show that the youth of today watches."
That's cool and all but the "youth of today" don't watch many award shows. He was more culturally relevant and recognizable. That's why they did that and that's what my friend, who assisted in the lighting of the show, informed me this morning.
And how old and out of touch are you that you don't realize I'm a female? Also who says "youth of today"? I love your responses because they are always volatile towards anyone who dares to have an opinion that differs from your own. Love.

Yes, as a "youth to today", which made me laugh out loud, I have to say no one under 50 knows who Klugman is. No one. I agree Sutton, Cory is culturally relevant and the addiction thing was important. It was a slow show but I enjoyed some of the moments. I will say the weird middle song was unnecessary. I would like the speeches to be longer because that is what the Emmys are all about. Honoring the best people in television. We want to hear the speeches, not some some interpretational dance about Breaking Bad. Holy God.
I just joined today so I could comment on this thread. I look forward to people who are old as dirt calling me a "newbie". This isn't the school yard people, you don't get to bully because it makes you feel young again.
Neil just said "I had fun but I am looking forward to not hosting again for a long time".

It's difficult to judge this because, for me, NPH's most recent Tony hosting gig was perfection. It was meant to inspire. The Emmy's were truly depressing (said this about halfway in and couldn't believe that the Modern Family creator actually verbalized it on air). Don't know if the Tony's can be topped, and don't know if NPH should even bother.
ModernMillie3, I'm well below 50 and I know who Klugman is. Granted, he's not someone that most people my age would know, but if you mentioned "The Odd Couple," they'd get it.

Millie that's not true. I know klugman from odd couple and hagman from the new dallas and I dream of jeanni
I liked glee that first year and a half but to me Cory was way to old. He seemed as old as some of my teachers... slight exaggeration
I like to tape the awards then FF so I can watch a 3 hr snorefest in u der an hour.
