I gotta say, I LOVE Wanda Sykes, but I saw that production in Media, PA earlier this year... and she should stick with her day job. Sorry, Wanda.
I love the idea of Mullally in this, it'd be great if she could do it without falling into Karen Walker antics, but that's doubtful.
In terms of theatre names I feel Donna Murphy, Katie Finneran, Martha Plimpton and Jan Maxwell should all be in the running. Finneran would bring the house down, she's probably my top choice.
Jackie Hoffman gets my vote for Hannigan.
I have a theory that a reason McArdle was so successful in the role was because she was the first. She wasn't awestruck from seeing another girl play the role. She wasn't seduced by the potential to "shine" on stage as ANNIE. She was a girl looking for a home, simple and heartfelt.
So many little girls know they can sing, know they can say the lines, know they look good in red and have a burning desire to dazzle on stage. They are so polished they come off as affected and insincere.
The best Annie I ever saw was an alternate in a community production. She wasn't the best singer, but you instantly CARED about whether she found a home or not.
ANNIE can either be an emotionally moving show with some good laughs or a boring showcase for child's developing ego.
I vote for Jackie Hoffman as Hannigan.
If I had my way, Sherie would be Miss Hannigan.

The other reason why the original was so well received was because, although McArdle was a young girl, she didn't sound like a child. She sounded like an adult trapped in a kids body. She wasn't whiny or "too cute." She was actually pretty gritty. I really like that about her performance.

About the only thing that could get me to a revival of Annie would be Jane Lynch as Miss Hannigan.
Oh Jordan, the things I would do to hear Sherie sing "Little Girls".

Andrea McArdle for Miss Hannigan. She would win a Tony
My first thought would be - Annie? Do we really need a revival.
My second was please not Andrea McCardle - there are too many actresses who would actually be good. Andrea did it in some regional house and apparently the only time she was good was during the curtain call when she sang Tomorrow. Great voice, limited actress, no comic timing.

I saw McArdle do Miss Hannigan, and no one wants to see it, trust me. She's a nice gal, very talented, and has not ONE funny bone in her body - it was like watching a high school performance. The Annie there, Melody Hollis, was terrific, BTW - real, not pushy or flashy and along with Louanne the best I've seen. In fact, I hired her immediately and have worked with her four times now.
My vote for Miss Hannigan would be Patti LuPone. I know she'd never really do it but I could see her tearing the ish out of that part (in a good way).
Harvey Fierstein for Miss Hannigan anyone?

Allison Janney. She has the comedic timing down. And she would tower over those little girls. Perfection.
I'd love to see Donna Murphy as Miss Hannigan.
Just get Carol Burnett back on the stage to do it.
