I know that the critical reception as well as the reception on this board was cool at best…but boy is the cast of the last revival gonna love hearing this!

^Seriously! Every production that I've since since the original production has paled in comparison. Loved the original set design.
And I certainly wasn't a fan of the '97 revival either, and Martin Charnin directed that one.

One could also just as easily - if not moreso - argue this as a case of Charnin not liking ot when anyone but him touches that show, no matter WHAT they do. He has more than a slight touch of arrogance about Annie.

Yes he does. He has never moved on. That is why every single major production since the original ( he oversees all of them one way or the other) are stale and uninspired.

I still say if I was a cast member in that last revival and all my hard work was just flat out slammed by the author, I'd be pissed.

Posted: 2/24/14 at 2:50pmI too adored the latest production on Broadway as I saw it three times. I loved the set, the costumes, the direction by Lapine, the new orchestrations, the cast. Everything. Okay, maybe not the choreography. But other than that, I found the production simply superb.

Why can't Martin Charnin be more like Stephen Sondheim and be very open minded about re-envisioning the piece rather than just a rehash of what we've seen before?
I really liked James Lapine's production because I felt what he really accomplished was stripping away 'the myth from the man', in other words, presenting the show to the level of what it's really about on the inside, not the outside!

"The entire creative team (Tom, Charles, and I) simply had to restore the charm and the magic of the musical, that has endured for lo, these many years, and that seemed to veer off-course in the recent Broadway production," Charnin told Playbill.com via email. ... "It will also, most importantly, approach the performances in a very truthful way, restoring the humour, strength, heart, and joy that are vital components of Annie, and that were in short supply, in the recent revival," Charnin said.
Good grief. I had not seen a stage production of Annie before the revival, but thought it did have heart and humor. To read Charnin's comments, you'd think it was a kid crying to her dog on a blackbox stage. Too bad about the set though; I liked the story-book feel to the mansion.
