Someone on THIS site hoping for the OBC to be cast in the movie?
Never thought I'd see the day.
Who thinks Lacy Chabert or Annaliese Van Der Pol would be good Penny's?
I was dissapointed to read this but Rob Marshall is one hell of a director and what he did to Chicago was amazing. Maybe this will win Best Picture, too.
Craig..
How about Goldie as Velma and Kate Hudson as Amber?
John TRavolta as Edna Turnblad. Sorry the picture is so bad I used Paintshop because I don't have photoshop on my new computer yet.

HA! Oh, actress, that could not be hotter!
Jack O'Brien may not have film experience (though he has directed for TV), but Jerry Mitchell does. He has provided choreography for Scent of a Woman, Meet Joe Black, The Object of My Affection, Jeffrey, In & Out, One True Thing, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Camp, etc.
"Sue,
That was rude! Marissa will pass for a teen till she is 50.
She just has that young look."
I think we have a winner!
Most idiotic statement of the day!
I wish they wouldve just kept everyone/everything from the original bway production in tact. It seemed to work for the people who crammed in the theater every night.

Hmmm... sounds interesting. But I agree with others...John Travolota as Edna? *chokes* My God, who's the casting director and what in the world are they thinking?!

They're thinking that Travolta in drag would sell a lot of tickets at the box office.
But, I'm with the camp that could live their lives without seeing him in the role.

I wouldn't consider Travolta the biggest box-office moneymaker though. I mean he hasn't done anything too noteworthy since Pulp Fiction, right?

Corine, Marissa is fine for the stage, because she does have a young look from a ways away, but if they plan on any close ups, she doesn't quite look 16, she looks older. It's not an insult, people age...except Bernadette Peters apparently. From aways away, she can pass for 16, but she wouldn't for close-ups.

That doesn't mean anything! Look at any film where they show a school the "popular" crowd are often played by actors in their late twenties... we know they aren't 18 but the average audience member doesn't give a damn!
Not actually having seen the Broadway Show, I feel that as long as the music is intact as well as the story somewhat it should be a pretty good show. The only qualm I do have (as seen above) is this idea of john Travolta as Edna. I just do not feel that he will do the part justice
I think the movie will turn out great no matter what, however, just because us "Broadway lovers" are spoiled with such great actors playing Edna, I think that is why we are so against Travolta. I can be that most of us would like to see one of the original Edna's play the part...I too do not agree with Travolta being Edna...but truth be told, he will sell at the box office. Sadly, but true.
JESSICA SIMPSON FOR AMBER!!!!
I'd love to see the girl from PArty of Five/Mean Girls as Penny

With a tip of the hat to Amanda Dehnert's darker, edgier, grittier production of Annie at the Trinity Rep, Rob Marshall will bring to the screen a darker, edgier, grittier vision of the musical Hairspray.
Penny is a teenager on the verge of a psychotic break due to extreme sexual and mental abuse at the hands of her mother. Spending her days soiling herself in a gritty, litter-strewn Baltimore alley, Penny finally snaps when a rat runs across her foot. The only person in her life she can remotely consider her friend, some fat girl named Tracy, finds Penny in a puddle of her own urine and asks, "God Penny, what's wrong with you."
At that moment, Penny has her psychotic break and imagines that she lives her life in a candy-colored version of her hometown where everybody bursts into song. But because she has such low self-esteem, she is only a sidekick even in her fantasy life.
Marshall had tremendous success with the "the musical numbers are only in one character's imagination" angle in the smash hit film Chicago. This time, however, there will be no happy ending, as Penny is jolted back to reality in a final scene reminiscent of the one in Last Exit to Brooklyn.

I made this pic a while ago using a picture of Travolta. Not perfect either, and actually, kinda scary...
i think they should cast tom cruise as link, ashely olsen as tracy, crispen clover as seaweed, seven segal as edna, and jessica alba as penny.
and if marshall directs, use the same costumes and choreography as chicago. if it worked once, it'll work again.

As long as Marc Shaiman is with the project... Im happy..
John Travolta will not be a big draw. He does not have a good track record lately
His movies in the new millenium:
Battlefield Earth
Lucky Numbers
Swordfish
Domestic Disturbance
Basic
The Punisher
A Love Song for Bobby Long
Ladder 49
Be Cool
None of those movie did well at the box office.
Hey...as long as they are shooting in Toronto...they may as well cast me as Link.
