Does anybody know why Newsies isn't touring. It isn't in any city's next year and I don't think it has plans on touring. It's really not that hard of a show to tour because the set can be just about the same as it was on Broadway.
It isn't touring because Disney doesn't want it to (yet). Why spend the money on a tour when it is bringing in people from all of the country and 9 weeks out of 10, is at over 90% capacity in the theatre? (I just checked, it last fell below 90% in early March). Even Mary Poppins didn't launch a tour until 2 and a half years after it opened on Broadway. PLUS Disney Theatricals has a lot of projects in development that it is doing out of town tryouts for, so that is probably a factor.
Disney only has 2 properties on Broadway right now (Starcatcher is theirs off-broadway) they're not going to tour when they, and I say this for lack of a better word because Disney and needing money have no business in the same sentence, NEED the money that broadway ticket prices are bringing in. I'd wait until Aladdin flys into town, then I wouldn't be surprised if it tours. I know they're trying to launch Newsies across the pond too so touring probably isn't at the top of their list.

i would guess that they are also waiting to see how long it lasts. no point in building a new set etc when you could easily tour the broadway production once it comes to and end. or use the rumoured london set if it flops here
It's such a fantastic production, it may be hard to take such huge production on tour.
^ it's not larger than Mary Poppins and that toured- also not as tech heavy- I'm not attacking you, I've seen it 5x I'm a fan! Just making a point.
Yeah it's not that big of a production. 3 towers and other miscellaneous set pieces and props that the cast moves on and off themselves.

Disney always plays it on the safe side and doesn't rush when it comes to touring. they waited 3 years to launch Poppins. Jeff Calhoun has stated that they designed a set that they could directly take on the road. So a tour was always in the shows cards even before it's Broadway success.

Newsies could easily tour with little if any changes, it is Disneys smallest musical they've produced. I imagine the tour will happen after they've launched Aladdin on Broadway and the London production of Newsies so I guess late 2014/early 2015. Lion King didn't start touring for a while too.
