Unless he gets too old for the role before the movie is made, I'd like to see Tom Cruise as Dan.

Well. I don't think a N2N movie would quite work. But while we're on the topic of dream casts, I'd love to see a black cast with LaChanze as Diana.
agreed with whatdoesntkillme, a movie version of next to normal seems super unlikely to happen at any point.

Tom Cruise and Lachanze are both already too old for the characters as they existed on Broadway. Diana and Dan are no more than 41 years old at the time of the action since she specifically says they were both undergrads when she got pregnant putting them between 36-41 on Gabe's 18th birthday.
By the time it hit Broadway, Ripley was 45 to Spencer's 40. Just a point of reference.
That being said...Toni Collette.

Valid point, but who says an actor must play a character who of the same age?

I can see Naomi Watts as Diana. No idea whether she can sing or not.
I can see something like this working on HBO, Showtime or Netflix
Someone once suggested Kate Winslet which I always thought was an interesting idea; and she can sing too
Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Gordon-Levitt as Dan? I can't see that...
I might get a lot of hate for this, but I think Matthew Morrison would make a fantastic Dan and Shawn mendes would be my dream gabe.
How about Allison Janney? She's a bit long in the tooth, but I think she passes for 45 easily.
Um Jake Gyllenhal and Emily Blunt
Kate Winslet or bust
Robert Downey Jr or Hugh Laurie for Dan
I am unsure about the acting, and but I think P!nk, would honestly slay the score. She has the grit, and the pain behind her voice to handle a lot of the songs, plus I would kill to hear her sing I Miss the Mountains.

But I think he's very against psychiatry as a scientologist so wouldn't work as subject matter
Unless they re-write the script (and I'm not saying they couldn't) - Dan and Diana need to believably be able to play 40. The story makes their timeline pretty clear. They conceived Gabe 18 years ago when they were right out of college (presumably at age 22 or so).
A tad off-topic but you know what has always REALLY bugged me about Next to Normal (and it's my favorite show, obviously)? The opening, when it's said it is 4am, then she had a ten minute sex session, then Dan is going to be late and then she's making lunches, the kids are going to school, etc. It doesn't add up and it has always bugged me.
Anyway, I remember the rumors of Kate Winslet and RDJ and that would have been amazing.

I think it's meant to reflect how these events are so distorted in her mind. The timeline isn't supposed to be taken literally.
My full Dream cast is
Pink as Diana
matthew Morrison as dan
Shawn Mendes as Gabe
Sarah Hyland as Natalie
Ben Platt as Henry

Funny enough, Sarah tweeted last week that she was singing the cast album in the car. I wish she'd come back to the stage

Y'all Evan Rachel Wood would be an amazing Diana. She also has the voice and versatility for it.
