Sure is!! Aslong as it keeps operating above it's running costs it could run for quite awhile!
If the figure of $200,000 a week running costs are correct then N2N has never had a week on Broadway where it has failed to meet it's costs.

Posted: 3/28/10 at 6:33pmI'm really surprised it took longer for Next to Normal to recoup than it did for West Side Story... I mean, it's such a smaller show, and has been selling so well one would think it would have surely recouped by now.

Aaah I misread it says the low to mid $200,000 range which I guess means 250k.
Still, it hasn't made anything less than that since last May.

Can anyone elaborate what:
"Mr. Stone spent about $100,000 to stage one of the most emotional numbers from the show during the live broadcast,"
Means? (I mean, what are they paying for?)

Congratulations to everyone involved, especially David Stone for taking a chance on this show.
It gives me faith that a completely original, 6 person musical with no stars can succeed on Broadway.Hopefully this will lead to producers taking more risks with original material!

Excellent news. And , as expected, it took almost a year.
“Next to Normal” now joins “Billy Elliot,” “Hair” and “West Side Story” as musicals from last season that have earned back their money. It will also begin a national tour at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles in November. Of its Broadway peers from last season, “Rock of Ages” is still running strong but has yet to recoup, “Shrek the Musical” closed this winter without making its money back.
Traditionally 1 show in 10 is expected to pay off, so these results are very good indeed.
As for the tour..Isn't the Ahmanson way too large for a show like this? If the tour is booked into large barn-like theaters the performers will have to give broader performances, which I feel will tear the delicate fabric of the show. What I liked about seeing it in the Booth as the intimacy.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 3/28/10 at 6:53pmRe the $100K - I believe that Bway shows have to pay quite a bit to air their numbers during the Tony Awards. They have to pay the cast for rehearsal and the performance, and I THINK (correct if I am wrong), they have to pay the show (TONY) for the airtime.

Broadway San Diego has it booked for the smaller Balboa Theatre instead of the Civic which is the usual touring house and has over 1,600 more seats. I guess some of the presenters are expecting the show to fit better in a smaller house. They could have put it in the bigger theatre in hopes of selling more tickets if they wanted to.

Posted: 3/28/10 at 7:23pmThe Ahmanson isn't terribly huge. It's a little over 2,000 seats and it's surprisingly intimate. I saw the John Doyle Sweeney Todd tour from the top balcony and I didn't feel far-removed from it at all.

Posted: 3/28/10 at 7:26pmYay! This is such great news! I just can't wait for the tour to come to Chicago! Also, while it's exciting that so many musicals from last season have recouped, we can't forget that Guys & Dolls, 9 to 5, [title of show], A Tale of Two Cities, and 13 didn't. Nonetheless, this is great news for the producers.

Posted: 3/28/10 at 7:31pmAs far as the cost of a Tony Awards performance, the producers have to pay their performers, a set for Radio City has to be built, many times the music is pre-recorded so they pay for musicians and studio time, etc.
