Also consider the fact that she's the only principal broadway Elphaba to ever play the part without any prior experience in the show. That's hardly a valid reason, and maybe it actually lends credence to the idea that because this role is so large and demanding, that it makes sense for people who play the role full-time to have been a standby or understudy first.
Yeah I would think the creative team would put her in rather than stage management and I know people who bought tickets not because they are wicked fans because they wanted to see her they would ask for a refund if she was not on. I bet my friends are not the only people are doing that.
I was there last night and thought she did a very good job. I went in there with absolutely no expectation and I was actually sort of amazed. Granted, her performance vocally wasn't the best, but she was aware of that. I spoke to her at the stage door and she's aware of how the performance went, but give the girl a break. She was SO nervous. Her acting was TERRIFIC...honestly, I was hearing regular audience members rave about her performance at intermission. She's going to find her footing, and she'll probably call out soon but she's got to get used to it.
And @ adamgreer...I saw Julie on Tuesday and she bored me to tears. She seemed to be completely on autopilot and went flat a few times during the show. I left the show knowing why she wasn't cast as a lead.
To each their own, but if you're that impressionable you shouldn't be going to first shows.
Staring in the flagstone production of arguably the biggest musical theatre phenomenon in the last decade
Ha ha, drama queen post of the day!
To each their own, but if you're that impressionable you shouldn't be going to first shows.
Sorry to disagree, I've attended MANY "first shows" on Broadway and had been amazed by the solid technique and preparation of many performers. Lame excuse - it's not like the high school principal can come out and apologize because it was her first performance.
Listen, I don't take my clothes off for anyone, even if it is "artistic". - JANICE
I'm thinking there's a good chance she didn't do the matinee today, although I hope she did! Anyway it wouldn't be over yet as curtain's at 2 i believe. Anyone see the understudy board today?
I too believe Julie Reiber is overrated and there is obviously a reason she hasn't been made the principle. I'm looking forward to seeing Nicole because I think she'll be great even if her first show wasn't that spectacular.
Woah, you guys, I can't believe you guys don't like Julie. I've seen her twice and was completely blown away by her, I though she was better than the leads she was covering for (Kerry and Marcie), whom I saw later and hated. I've never seen anyone dislike Julie before, but I'm not saying you don't have valid points, I'm just surprised at the opinion.
Well, it is simply a matter of opinion on her acting and voice. I personally don't like Julie at all, her voice is fine, but the way she acts scenes and songs out irritates me.
I'm kind of annoyed there aren't any audios on youtube, not that I like illegal recordings, but I'm really curious to hear her.

Unfortunately Kerry Ellis was **** during her Broadway run, she could easily overpower that Julie Reiweakling. As for Marcie Dodd, at least she had some sort of distinct characterisation.
Okay, as fun as it is to make fun of a performer by splicing their last name and an insult, can we please use their real names for the sake of argument.
I have heard anywhere from theatre atrocity to greatest Elphie ever. We can only hope the bad reviews are from the people bitter about Julie not getting the lead, and thus biased. I am REALLY hoping that is true...
