Night Music replacement rumor?

Posted: 5/27/10 at 1:01pmWow, I'd love for Bernadette Peters to play Desiree, she'd be fabulous. The other person not mentioned here that I was wondering about is Jane Krakowski who not only was in COMPANY but has other Sondheim connections (including singing a couple of his songs in compilation recordings). Not that she's right/wrong for the part, but someone else to add to the mix, however since she hasn't done anything on Broadway since 30 ROCK started, I doubt it's her. Plus Peters is the choice that makes the most sense and I'd just be in heaven if that were to happen.

Posted: 5/27/10 at 1:02pmI don't think, if the rumour proves true that you are going to see a major recasting of the other roles to fit Peters's age, unless of course if the actors have already committed to other projects. On stage, with her limited stage time with the character I think Peters would even be okay opposite Lazar. Yes she's older, but its not a deal breaker.

EXACTLY.

Posted: 5/27/10 at 2:03pmWould Bernadette be able to pull off the British accent? I could swear I've read she had some issues with it in "Song and Dance."

New thread on ATC. The poster is saying an announcement will be made "Soon."

Wow, I can't say I'm not really excited. Might have to head to NYC sooner than expected if this turns out to be true.
EDIT: PS Of all shows on Broadway, who knew that NIGHT MUSIC would turn out to be such great source of Broadway gossip since it was originally announced when back when? I remember checking obsessively the original threads where people swore Kate Winslet and Raul Esparza would open the show, then Marin Mazzie, then Hannah Waddingham (ugh, can't believe that was ever in the cards), then Nicole Kidman, and finally Riedel wrote about Zeta-Jones, then the Gwyneth Paltrow/Blythe Danner/Debbie Reynolds rumors, now this, it's been fun

This production uses all British accents.
The new thread on ATC has been deleted. I hope that's a good sign!

Well, some of those people up there could have fooled me.

Several cast members have hinted at impending good news over the last day or two, so this all must have come together quite recently.
I'm curious to see if Lansbury will be willing to stay on for someone as highly regarded as Peters or if they'll need to find a new Madame Armfeldt as well.
Regardless, good news for a clunky if all-together enjoyable production.

I don't think Ms. Lansbury would stay after 20 June anyway. She wants to do a straight heavy play (something like Red) or if a miracle occurs a movie.
I hope they can get Ms. Reynolds to replace her.

Posted: 5/27/10 at 3:23pmIs Bernadette Peters really expected to bring in the kind of numbers Catherine Zeta Jones does?

Posted: 5/27/10 at 3:28pm^ No. But she sustained Gypsy for a full year. I am sure with a discount it could sell enough to make it's weekly nut.

Posted: 5/27/10 at 3:39pm^Not to mention it was the Shubert... nearly twice the size of the Kerr... yeah, if Peters latches onto this this baby could run...

Posted: 5/27/10 at 4:10pmI think Bernadette could definitely make this show an attraction in a theatre the size of the Kerr. Most of the regular theatregoers would go again to catch her in her first show in 6 years. And tourists know who she is, though on the Catherine Zeta level though.

It's going to be Harvey Fierstein. That's what I heard.
