#75While I'd LOVE to see Bernadette on Broadway.......
Posted: 5/27/10 at 4:50pm

While I'd love to see Bernadette on Broadway again, and it would be neat to see her as desiree... There are still a few questions left unanswered...

1) Will Bernadette take Sat. July 17th off both perfs for Broadway Barks? This is her busiest time of year for her YEAR LONG JOB of operating the Broadway Barks Charity, she would be needing to work around the clock on it, especially leading up to the event. She isn't just the face of Barks, she actually pulls a lot of long hours, business meetings, acquiring funds, donations, and everything. She is a busy business woman.

2) Bernadette Ended her Broadway carreer by playing the dream role of any actresses lifetime. She has never returned to Broadway. WHY would she now decide, "Ok, I'll join this 2 cent production, as a REPLACEMENT for a Movie Star" Btw, the show wasn't the best revival of the year, and won't likely win any Tony awards. I could see her maybe joining the Biggest show of the year, so why Night Music, and why now?

3)Did we forget that she is Bernadette Peters?

The show's website has added a message saying tickets are now on sale through August 29th.

Something is clearly happening.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

She won the Tony award

No she didn't.

If you mean Gypsy, she didn't win the Tony. If you mean Annie Get Your Gun, she won the Tony, but she returned in Gypsy.

On the other hand, Bernadette is not getting any younger (who is?) and this is her last credible chance to do a landmark Sondheim role. If I were her, I could put all those other considerations aside for the chance to perform as Desiree. I'd go back to see the show (which I liked but didn't love) in a heartbeat for her, and if Judi Dench were to join the cast, I would feel like I had died and gone to heaven!

Well you get my point. Gypsy is the role of a career, you can't top that. Unless its playing Desiree in a Trevor Nunn production of ALNM.

Except a lot of people don't think the production is great. I'd love to see Bernadette back on Broadway, but she should pick a great production to come back in, not just a mediocre one of a great show.

Well you get my point.

No, I don't think we do. You are making a lot of assumptions about her that, unless you are actually her or someone in her circle, I don't think you can make.

Peters worked around the Broadway Barks demands, I assume, when she was in GYPSY, so I assume this wouldn't be the first time she was confronted with that.

As others have said, why wouldn't she want to step into this production? Its her last chance to play a role that perhaps she has always wanted to play on Broadway in a play written by a dear friend (and likely to be the last Broadway revival of it in his lifetime).

In terms of not wanting to step into a revival because its 'substandard' - that is of course completley a matter of subjectivity. Sondheim apparently loves the revival and it got its fair share of very good reviews.

Its certainly no less divisive in quality than Peter's production of GYPSY, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN or THE GOODBYE GIRl...

Angela Lansbury played Mama Rose, won her 3rd Tony for it and after that went to replace Constance Towers (who unlike Catherine Zeta-Jones wasn't Oscar winner and Tony nominee) in The King and I, was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance and now doing just fine at age 84.
Bernadette Peters is only 62 years old why should she retire?

IMO I will believe it when I see it, and then I swear I will pay full-price. Have been dying to see BP since I saw her in AGYG, but never saw her in Gypsy. It's been too long.

"Why BWW not reporting on this at all?"

Because there is no press release to cut and paste and no Reidel gossip to re-label as Rialto Chatter.

The website has gone back to saying "Final weeks- closing June 20th". Let's hope this isn't bad news...

"2) Bernadette Ended her Broadway carreer..."

Has anyone made her aware of that? It seems like the kind of thing she'd want to know.

It used to say "Final weeks to see Zeta Jones/Lansbury. Final performance June 20th. Runs through August 27th (or whatever date)" and now it's just gone back to "Final performance June 20th"

Yeah, but Telecharge was still only selling tickets through June 20th. It's really not a big deal. They must just be waiting until the official announcement is made.

I wonder if someone jumped the gun a bit.
Even when the website said it was selling through August, Telecharge only went through June 20. Then they changed the website back. I hope that means they are waiting to make it official and not that the deal has fallen through...

The website currently says this for me.

"Final Weeks! A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
will play its final performance on June 20."

I definitely think someone jumped the gun before.
