With how expensive travel to and from the city is (Amtrak varies, bus is around $80), I’m loving these 80-90min 5pm shows. Last weekend I did a two show Saturday with The Oursiders and Oh, Mary!, next weekend is Water for Elephants and Oh, Mary!, then 7/25 is The Great Gatsby and Job.
I say it every time this comes up and I'll say it again. I LOVE nontraditional showtimes. For someone who can only get into the city once or twice a year, I love packing in as many shows as possible and nontraditional times help a lot with that.
Was in NYC in May for 10 days and was very happy to see that "The Great Gatsby" had Thursday matinees. You try to see everything, and it's so hard to do that. Was able to see TGG on that Thursday and loved it. The tickets my friend and I had were side Orchestra, and when I got to the box office to pick up the tickets, was thrilled that - for whatever reason, the box office moved us to center Orchestra, right on the aisle.
On 11/14/24A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical will start having Thursday 2pm Matinees and Monday 7pm performances. They will be dark on Tuesday.
Oh wow they’re following The Great Gatsby’s lead with that schedule. It seems like Thursday Matinees are coming back again. Outsiders is going to start doing them too

Is your goal really to see everything? While I understand loving broadway, theater etc. that's a very big goal and some shows will also tour
I know it's anecdotal because I'm only talking about one person (me) but I only get to NYC once or twice a year. A show like A Wonderful World probably wouldn't made the cut with a normal schedule but if it has a Thurs matinee, there's a good chance I'll get a ticket for it.
It was probably seven years ago, but I *still* talk about how 1984, which ran 100 minutes, did Friday shows at 5 and 9. Both far more conducive to an evening out than 7 or 8. Great to see more nontraditional curtain times coming up.
Nontraditional showtimes are why I like to do a Broadway binge the week between Christmas and New Years. Unfortunately, it is also the busiest week of the year and the most expensive week of the year. But still. You could see two shows a day every day for the week if you really wanted to.

Me, too! At the end of May, needing to catch up on Tony nominees, I did the very rare (perhaps never) thing of taking the train from DC on a Wednesday morning and returning after the Saturday matinee. In just over 72 hours' time I squeezed in six shows. Thanks to Gatsby's Thursday matinee, even more bang for my buck than I expected.
