As much as I love Rory, wtf how is he playing the uncle! Steve Carell was 43 when he played the character in the movie....

Don't know what sort of changes they have made, but interesting to see how much younger they're going for with Uncle Frank in comparison to the film.

It looks like they've reconceived the character of Dwayne, since Logan Rowland doesn't appear to be much older than the young girl playing Olive. It would then make sense that the actors playing the Uncle and the Grandpa are significantly younger than their counterparts in the film.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

One would think that the country's foremost scholar of Proust would be in his mid-30's, at least. But I'm more than willing to suspend my disbelief.

SonofRobbieJ, Rory O'Malley is going on 33. He is in his mid-30s.

I didn't see the readings, workshops, etc. Any clue as to why they are changing the characters so much? I thought that is what made the movie so brilliant.

"Going on 33" is early thirties. Quit rushing it.

Is the character gay in the movie?

^Yes.

I was always disappointed that Sunshine didn't do better at the Oscars with nominations - it deserved nods for Toni Colette, Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell. Alan Arkin won the Oscar for supporting actor, but Carell should've been nominated I think.

I am so excited for this show. Did anyone see it at La Jolla way back when?

I'm always up for new Finn and I loved the film, but based on the deadly La Jolla reviews, I hope they did a lot of work on the show.

JoshBrown, I did...it one of my least favorite theatre experiences ever. I've gone into a decent amount of detail on other threads, but I'll just leave it that I saw it two days before lockdown, and in the pre-show reception I was at, the Managing Director of the Playhouse announced we were seeing a finale that had just been installed that afternoon. I wish they had installed a different show instead.

Sounds like a perfect fit for 2nd Stage. Unit set, etc.

I'll be interested to see how they make a road trip work on stage. These aren't the characters that I'd pick to "sing." They don't seem melodramatic enough to work, etc. But we'll see. If he can make a spelling bee exciting then who knows?

Any one with knowledge (somethingwicked?) have an idea of their intentions with this after 2ST. Are they gunning for a Broadway transfer..?

I don't know anything particular, but I would say that their intentions right now are purely focused on Second Stage. If something happens to warrant it having a life beyond there, I'm sure they'd be thrilled, but it's not really something they can plan for beyond trying to produce the best product possible.

I've seen the boot of the San Diego preview production.

A collapsible VW bus was constructed for the road trip, with items rolling by on a conveyor belt to simulate movement.

I don't remember Taylor's character in the film, but I'm in love with him so I'm game.

If I recall, that character in the movie was in one scene, when they make a stop at a gas station and the uncle runs into him on a trip with his new boyfriend.

I've read they've scrapped basically everything from the prior incarnation at La Jolla, including the entire score save for 3 songs.

Im glad to hear they scrapped almost everything. That show was a hot mess from beginning to end.
