Congrats to all, especially She Loves Me."
People really seem to either love or hate his work. I personally love it (and I loved First Daughter Suite), but there's almost never a critical consensus on his shows.

My streaming didn't kick in until somewhat into Michael Urie's droll bicycle ride, so I missed what I later learned was a shot of Jennifer Simard.during that fun opening. What was she doing and where was she?
By the way, I love the seat-of-the-pants, non-corporate vibe of the Drama Desk Awards, so much looser than the Tonys.
I could see how he could be an acquired taste, but I really loved First Daughter Suite. Thought it was beautifully crafted and executed. Simple, but complex.
I don't really get the Shuffle Along love, but eh whatever.

Never been a huge LaChuisa fan (except for his Wild Party) but also loved First Daughter Suite. And frankly I would have liked to have seen more acting noms as well.

I like to support LaChuisa, because he seems like a good apple and I'm ALL for supporting new music. But I am one of those people who viscerally hates it. His stuff it too atonal for my taste.
I still for the life of me cannot understand all of the She Loves Me love! I thought it was charming, but I left the theatre, smiled, and went on my way. Whereas I left both Color Purple and Spring Awakening feeling like they literally changed me. I saw Color Purple for the second time last week and it was even better than the first. To each his or her own, but I am really scratching my head that She Loves Me pulled out that win. (Then again, this is an awards show in which Ben Platt wasn't even nominated, so it's all a bit of shenanigans imho.)

Yeah, don't understand the Shuffle Along win. First Daughter Suite, American Psycho and Evan Hansen (was it eligible?) were much much better musicals.
Shuffle Along is really a drag.

She was just reading the rules in character.

Not every show is life changing. It is an absolutely perfect production of what it is. It actually elevates the material. I loved it....but I love The Color Purple too -- they are not mutually exclusive.
