Cabaret (1998 )

Chicago (1996)

Guys and Dolls (1992)

No, No Nanette (1971)

Candide (1976) - still one of my favorite evenings at the theatre , pure magic
Carousel - RNC
Gypsy (Every time they have revived it)
Pirates of Penzance (1980)
My Fair Lady (1976)
Most Happy Fella (1992)
Nine (2003)
Big River (2004)
Peter Pan (1980)
Sweeney Todd (Both Broadway revivals)
Brigadoon (1981 or so)

All the ones Pal Joey mentioned
I am limiting my selections to musicals , Broadway seems to revive plays better and my list would be huge.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the terrific production of Kiss me Kate from 2000.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

These were all good evenings in the theater, but some of them were controversial--some folks loved it, some folks hated it.

I'm curious about those "perfect" revivals that come along and charm everyone.

The 2000 Kiss Me Kate was definitely that, so was the 1976 Candide.

The Angela Lansbury Gypsy counts, but not the Bernadette or Patti revivals, both of which had as many haters as lovers. (You probably know where I stand on those.) Same goes for the John Doyle instrument-in-hand revivals, which ya love or ya hate.

But I really think there's an approach that makes magic, that involves mixing respect for the original and everyone's expectations with taste and wisdom about what needs changing.

Surprisingly, McAnuff's How To Succeed revival was quite wonderful. The video projections worked for that show - plus he had a cast you couldn't beat. This time around...not so lucky.

Casting, of course, is key. But there's an appropriateness that's also involved.

Interesting that some directors and choreographers can hit it sometimes but not others, like McAnuff, Kathleen Marshall and Sam Mendes.

Sweeney Todd and Company weren't disappointments? Clearly you weren't reading BWW at the time.

I MEANT to ask: Who played in the ORIGINAL production of 110 in the Shade and WHEN it played.

(I thought the 2007 was an original -- I didnt' see it.)

ON YOUR TOES was the best of all for the 1936 orchestrations (albeit with a much improved percussion part and a pick up in tempo.

dramamama611, you can visit http://www.ibdb.com and search for any Broadway production on that website from today to years past. Search "110 in the Shade" and you will find every Broadway production of it, and the cast lists.

WEST SIDE STORY (2009)

It pains me that so many people are panning it...I love this show so much and can't wait to see it again (already have two additional sets of tickets).
