One night on Bway: Waitress or The Color Purple?

I am going to NYC in August, and I only have one night to see a show. I'm torn between Waitress and The Color Purple. I am a huge Sara Bareilles fan and have heard wonderful things about Jessie Mueller. I know nothing about The Color Purple other than that Cynthia Erivo's voice blows my mind and Heather Headley is my childhood idol.

Which one would you see? Or is there a third option that you think is even better?

Absolutely go with The Color Purple. I saw both last month and Waitress paled in comparison to the overall production. While there are many great pieces in Waitress (mainly the cast and score) The Color Purple is one of the finest productions I've seen with a knockout performance from Cynthia Erivo!

I absolutely adore Waitress and Jessie Mueller is stunning in the show and Sara's score is chock full of wonderful songs, but to miss Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple would be a crime. That performance is beyond words, so do not miss that.

"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.

Waitress is one of the most generic musicals I've ever seen. The Color Purple isn't a great musical by any means (I wouldn't even call it a good one), but this production is quite great. Erivo and Brooks are giving two of the best performances on Broadway.

Cynthia Erivo in this role is one of those once in a generation performances. I will be talking about the day I saw her for years to come. If I missed it I would be kicking myself like I still am for missing Patti in Gypsy.

"

A theater person being dramatic? Perish the thought!

Ok...I'LL be the voice of reason: The Color Purple

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The Color Purple with this cast is truly incredible. Also, if you get to the city reasonably often, I'm sure Waitress will still be playing with the way it's been selling.

Agreed. I'm a fan of both shows and think Erivo and Mueller are both not to be missed. But Erivo started her role in November vs Mueller who just started, so you'll have more time to see her.

Waitress is a collossal bore. Jessie Mueller can't save it. The theatre smells like (pies) good and (turkey) not so good. So here's another vote for Color Purple.
