I think he should, i have an inncentive to watch now. I want to see how the audience reacts. Chris Rock, who i find very funny, is a watered-down version of Dave Chappelle. Do you think he would ever host an awards show like that? No way. I think they chose him because he can cross the line with limits.
Whoever said the thing about the awards shows being stereotypical or whatever has a point. I don't think i've ever watched the CMA's. I can't stand country music.
I think is comment was just a joke, obviously, because in part he's right. I know the majority of guys don't sit back and watch the Tony's like they would watch the super bowl.

Watered down Chappelle? Please. Watch his stand-up.
Dave Chappelle isn't half the celebrity that Chris Rock is.
They're trying to give the Oscars an "edge".
A SAFE edge yes, and that's why it's not Jon Stewart.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 11:08pmI'm someone who works in the film industry, and can hardly stand to watch the Academy Awards as a rule. (Of course, I feel that way about awards shows in general.) They have become so hugely bloated and self-important. People crying hysterically over being voted (in effect) "most popular" by a few thousand other people in the business? It's ridiculous. That said, I may watch this year just because I like Chris Rock and will be curious a to what he does.

I agree with Phantom, we can only hope that Mssr. Rock's Award show banter will be more fresh and inspired than some lame, recycled joke (we've all heard a 1,000 times) about gays watching the Tonys.
Not a Chris Rock fan, but an awards show fan - so I will be tuned in.

You're right, it IS an old joke. But Chris Rock repeats it and suddenly people are calling him "ignorant".
Double standards are a form of discrimination as well.

It was a JOKE. Laugh. Get over it. Chris Rock is not a homophobe or a racist. He SATIRES things.
I think he is going to be fantastic on Sunday.
Man--white people are so damn uptight!

Speak that truth, jrb!!! White folks ARE so freaking uptight.
Goodness gracious me, did everyone have their funnybones removed? I mean...YES...we all have very different ideas of what is funny, but I can't stop wondering if there isn't, in fact, just a touch of racism to all of this. Rock, who is edgy and smart and political and VERY pro-black (people are SURPRISED by this???) is not someone who makes the white folks feel all warm inside (paging Mr. Cosby, Mr. Bill Cosby, please pick up the white-friendly courtesy phone). His material regarding his racist uncle and the fact that he, too, looks over his shoulder at ATM's watching out for not another black person, but a n*gger, is scandalously funny and cuts right to the core of all of our fears. So it's just easier to say he's 'not funny' than to truly examine what he's saying.
And someday, someone will simply have to tell me what Johnny Carson did for the film industry. I mean...if that's the criteria for hosting the awards and all.

The fact that he's one of the most influential and successful comedians of the past 20 years is a lot more important than the fact that you personally don't get into his style of performance.

Posted: 2/23/05 at 10:56amI have to say - if I didn't have a show that night (that no one will come to of course because they'll all be home watching the Oscars), I would be watching this for the first time in years, thanks to the hosting of Rock.

...whereas I'll be watching as I do every year, despite the hosting of Rock. Nothing to do with the "controversy"...just never found him funny. Different strokes, folks...
(and no, I'm not suggesting Gary Coleman host...)

Posted: 2/23/05 at 12:11pmI usually go out and watch the awards. This year I will be at home alone so that I don't miss one moment. I really Like Chris Rock and I think he will do a good job. He may push the envelope on Sunday (I hope he does!) but I think he is smart enough to know that he is hosting the Oscars and will only go but so far!

Chris Rock is funny.
But then, so are minstrel shows!
Speaking of which, Here's a scene from the re-vamped version of CAROLINE, OR CHANGE.

"And someday, someone will simply have to tell me what Johnny Carson did for the film industry. I mean...if that's the criteria for hosting the awards and all."
Gosh, Robbie sorry you missed his obituary, they covered it pretty thoroughly. I'm not sure why Mr. Carson needs to get slammed to defend Mr, Rock but...
Carson hosted the Academy Awards several times. It was generally felt that he not only handled the show well and could be counted on to be able to "think on his feet" and make topical jokes related to what had just happened on the stage, but he was arguably the most influential man in hollywood. His "Tonight Show" was not only the most watched late night show (by far) but his approval could be counted on to be a sort of benediction: When Carson put someone on his show, it was as if he had told this nation "This guy is OK-- go see his movie!" Carson was also strictly a TV performer-- he never made a movie-- so his hosting was seen as TV's approval of the film event.
Again, I'm not sure why you compared Chris Rock to him, but it's not really fair to Rock: Johnny Carson, as was observed over and over in his obituaries, was the most watched, most beloved star in the world....

Tonya, take the giant dildo out of your ass and get a reality check.
To everyone above:
I wasn't saying that I was offended by Rock's comment - I most certainly was not. And as for the "White people are so uptight," I hope that wasn't directed towards me. My point was that if Chris Rock can say "Only gay people watch the tony's," we can say "Only black people listen to Chris Rock." Both are incorrect, both are stereotypes, and some people would find both funny. So it goes both ways, that's all I'm saying.

Wow, Joe, you sure did misread what I wrote. Or perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I'll endeavor to explain.
Someone on this board insinuated that Chris Rock has no business hosting a film awards event because he, indeed, is not as well known for his film work (of which he has done some) as he is for his stand-up and his Emmy-winning television appearances. If this is to be the criteria, then how does someone explain Carson's hosting of the awards for so many years. AND, on top of that, how does one account for his excellence at the job, if the job rested on one's experience in the film world. I never said anything disparaging about Carson. Only about the poster who made that silly remark.
