I've been opposed to modern performers earning the the EGT or their EGOT for the same performance, and now according to TV Line, the Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program has been eliminated. And I say it was time. It should've been awarded for performances created uniquely for television, and three out of four times it went to performers that ultimately also won a Tony and a Grammy for the same performance, except basically waking up early to sing the song on the Today Show.

Agree 100%. Being able to win 3/4ths of an EGOT for the same role just being performed on stage, on a TV set for 4 minutes to promote the stage version and in a recording studio to be able to sell at and in connection with the stage version was never in the spirit of what the EGOT was meant to recognize.

if i may. there are also way too many emmys in general. im glad this is eliminated and shouldn't be acknowledged for any egot. i looked through 67 pages to see all the nominations. there should also be one set of emmys, not a seperate daytime emmy. of course not all need to be broadcast, but they dont need a seperate title. the 'guest' actor category drives me absolutely nuts. if a performance is good enough it can go in the supporting category. its another way of giving an undeserved award. i wish actors would also protest this as it is diluting the meaning of the award and making a fool of what is supposed to be a high honor.

The "EGOT" wasn' "meant" to recognize anything. It's a pop culture creation

And this pop culture creation exists not because it's a formal award created and administered by an organization or a legal entity but because enough people think it's a significant achievement and talk about it in a large enough volume for a long enough period of time until it becomes a "thing" and then recognize the achievement of that "thing" when it happens, hence my comment.

I couldn't agree more, everythingtaboo. Getting an EGOT should be a rare achievement; it's a sign of a special artist who has mastered quality work in 4 different media/disciplines. You shouldn't get three-fourths of a way to an EGOT for basically doing the same thing or same property. Yet that's where Cynthia Erivo and Ben Platt are lucky to find themselves, thanks to this unnecessary Emmy. (''The Band's Visit'' won this Musical Performance in Daytime last, so I guess Katrina Lenk and Ari'el Stachel are also three-fourths of the way to an EGOT, too.) This lame (and lazy) category never should've existed, but thank God it's gone.

While the term “existed” beforehand, it became a “thing” relatively overnight because of a 30 Rock episode that aired less than 10 years ago. I know that doesn’t fit your idea of a long-honored tradition that gains traction and with it, rules, but whatever.

The EGOT has been around since the 1980s and has been known to be used by performers, their fans, and showbiz in general. And I'd argue that the same audience that care about things such as the EGOT were the same fandom as 30 Rock, so there wasn't that much new awareness. It's always been a thing.

I never said it was a long honored tradition but thanks for putting words in my mouth. And I remember Rita Moreno talking about how honored she was to be one of the first to win an EGOT years before whatever episode you're talking about aired "less than 10 years ago". And here's the part that's really going to blow your mind... when she talked about the EGOT, people understood what she was referring to.
You sound like you're having a tough day and just need to go back and forth with someone over something incredibly trivial just for the sake of arguing. Please do it with someone else.

So this would apply to performances on The View, etc. What other kinds of performances are eligible for this category? Could say, a really catchy song from Sesame Street have won?

Pretty much all of this is verifiable false and easily Google-able. And I’m actually having a wonderful day, but I do appreciate the concern.

The term EGOT originated hilariously and egotistically: in 1984, Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas proclaimed that he hoped to win all 4 major entertainment awards in 5 years. How'd he do? His Wikipedia page says it all... "He has not, as yet, been nominated for any of these awards, but has received a People's Choice Award and a Golden Globe nomination."

It is? Then why don't you go ahead and verify it. When I said you were having a tough day, I was merely trying to give you an out for spewing such utter nonsense. You should have taken it.

''Could say, a really catchy song from Sesame Street have won?''
The Daytime Emmys do have a category for Original Song, so songs from ''Sesame Street'' have been nominated and won. Nominated writers have included Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alex Lacamoire. (Other winning songs have come from soaps, etc.)
By the way, I wish the Grammys would tighten their rules for cast recording, too. They currently give out prizes to the ''principal soloists.'' But when ''Hamilton'' can list 10 principal soloists and ''Dear Evan Hansen'' can list 8, that's excessive. To me, ''principal soloist'' is maybe the primary two or three vocalists, not 8 or 10.
