PETA to protest Catherine Zeta-Jones outside of the Walter Kerr theater...

Roxy, your reactions in this thread and in similar threads in the past are what is particularly galling about you. Mocking the killing of animals and thinking you're being a rebel by smacking your lips and flapping your gums about how delicious animals are. Meanwhile, you've had a chunk of your intestine removed and are in treatment for cancer.

Yeah, yeah, you're a virile manly carnivore. Long may you reign.

I'm a lifelong vegetarian and I'm extremely passionate about animal rights, but I can't stand PETA. They make the rest of us look bad and they're actually harming their case. They want animal cruelty to stop, but they're cruel to people. Hypocritical much? The only good thing about them is the videos they put out showing what really happens to the animals. People need to see that. Other than that, PETA is worthless.

Elphaba3, you do realize that there is some talks about the truth of those videos. In other words there are some people who feel that when they are talking with "former Ringling Bros. employees" that they are just regular members of PETA helping to make propaganda.

Winston, you're going to have to quote reliable sources. All Ringling Bros does on their website is talk about the "editing" of the video and how, if true, they're definitely going to look into it. So, I would say whatever these "some people" think about who is interviewed, it's not like that phony pimp at ACORN.

Namo,

In the process of trying to find the article that spoke about PETA making propaganda videos to talk about that which the circus does, I found this interesting article. It talks about how PETA actually dressed up as a bloody elephant in front of an elementary school as a way to use scare-tactics to scare the kids there.

PETA uses methods of protest to teach the very young

I love how the circus spokeswoman in the article can't say that the animal abuse incidents didn't happen, just that it was "drastically edited down to three minutes," ... and "included clearly enhanced sound for dramatic effect."

So they aren't abused constantly? Only for three minutes?? See? Plus the sound effects make the abuse seem more abusive.

I dunno. I used to love going to Ringling Bros. I used to love the wild animal acts. I used to want to believe the trainers and handlers used positive reinforcement to encourage the animals to behave in ways that are unnatural just for our amusement and that they loved the applause. Because who could abuse those big creatures with floppy ears and trunks with old soul liquid eyes?

The thing is, elephants don't like doing handstands on their front legs. They don't do these things the circus makes them do out in the wild. They are doing it because they have it beaten into them.

Now, the PETA member quoted in the article is an individual dork. No, what the circus does to elephants isn't traumatizing little kids, YOU dressing up like a bloody animal and showing up outside their school is doing that. And also encouraging people like Roxy to get all up in arms and say "How DARE you try to stop my god-given right to go to this circus and I'M GONNA EAT STEAK TOO HA HA HA HA!!!"

In other words, for every PETA a-hole, there is an equal and opposite reactionary a-hole (Roxy).

Unfortunately, animals are still treated horribly.

Namo,

I will admit that I am having trouble finding the source that i had in mind when talking about PETA doctoring those videos to highlight their own personal views.

I honestly feel that PETA has given themselves a bad name. That some of the things that they have done have been things that also end up shooting themselves in the foot. Therefor, I am sure that there are people who know this and take the information that PETA is giving out at their protests with a grain of salt.

In other words, with stunts that PETA does such as the paint throwing and dressing up like a bleeding elephant in front of an elementary school ends up hurting their message and have people not take them as seriously as they would if they were sane about the whole thing.

I don't always agree with some of PETA's tactics. I do applaud however any group that looks out for the proper treatment of animals. Ghandi said, "You can tell a lot of a society by the way it treats it's animals" and I agree. Yes, I eat meat and wear leather, drink milk etc. Some of the work I do involves the use of large amounts of feathers. I hope however that the animals which provided me with those things were treated well when they were alive and euthanized humanly.
As far as PETA killing animals. I would much prefer an animal that has to be euthanized be done in a painless and stress free way.
Going after puppy mills, large meat and dairy production which abuses it's livestock and entertainment venues which exploit and abuse animals for entertainment is a noble cause, IMHO.

My apologies to Frankenstein

Meat - Good
NAMO - Bad

Namo, I am having lamb steak for dinner. Go chew on some tofu & wash it down with a rhubarb coctail.

Oh & by the way, Mrs R is sitting here naked & wearing a real fur coat. In her defense, it is 20 years old & was bought before we learned that killing animals for warmth was bad. However. for her 50 th birthday, I bought her a sheared beaver jacket. It is not as bad as the coat as it is only 1/2 as long & therefore on 1/2 of the beavers died. The others built the Hoover dam.

Imagine the pioneers eating tofu & keeping warm in chenille robes & slippers. Imagine no animals killed for anything & all dying of old age. Would have had a slight overpopulation problem over the years wouldn't you say?

By the way NAMO,you will always be my personal ***hole. I will think of you fondly whenever I do a # 2.

SNAFU,

I am not saying that some of the things PETA does are wrong. The things that they are fighting against are good causes. However, I do think that the problem is more along the lines of how they express their viewpoint rather then the viewpoints themselves.

I don't see how protesting a popular actress outside her sold out show is a bad idea. It is great publicity for them. It's beats the hell out of standing outside Charlotte Rae's apartment.

The treatment of animals for food and fashion is deplorable and people in this country live in a sad state of denial with their blinders on.

To the poster who joked enjoying their Peruvian chicken, unless it was organic, farm-raised free range, I hope you enjoyed your added hormones, antibiotics, and the bleach they wash it with.

All living creatures deserve respect and dignity, even if they are to become food or clothing. If PETA raises some attention for that, I am ok.

The three most disturbing things in this thread:

(a) Catherine Zeta-Jones' use of fur.
(b) Mr. Roxy's posts.
(c) ljay's posts with Miss Jones in all her fur-wearing glory with that little <3 at the bottom. NOT AMUSING.

I don't find picketing and protesting a high profile actress in a successful show who is known to wear fur as a fashion statement as a means to raise awareness of the fur industries rather barbaric and cruel practices a bad thing either. It gets people talking, it gets media attention. CZJ chose a life of celebrity, unfortunately this is a by product of that. I am sure if she were just Amelia Flopsbottom from Staten Island she wouldn't get picketed.
