PETA to protest Catherine Zeta-Jones outside of the Walter Kerr theater...

I am consider myself an animal right activist and I deplore some of the stuff PETA chooses to focus on. The fur issue is fine but focusing on one celebrity seems to be neglecting the issue as a whole. Unless Zeta-Jones is pelting the animals herself, it seems more proactive to go after the supplier of said furs. They seem to enjoy these staged protests.

I stopped even listening to PETA when they went after the throwing of dead fish in Seattle and Obama for squashing a fly. They seem to thrive on sensationalism and therefore leave some of the larger problems and sources of animal cruelty behind in favor of buzz worthy protests.

It's the wearing of fur, period.

I used to be a vegetarian. I used to be a member of PETA. While neither of those things are true for me any more, I still think that animals - even those who wind up on people's plates - should be treated humanely.

Now, the PETA member quoted in the article is an individual dork. No, what the circus does to elephants isn't traumatizing little kids, YOU dressing up like a bloody animal and showing up outside their school is doing that. And also encouraging people like Roxy to get all up in arms and say "How DARE you try to stop my god-given right to go to this circus and I'M GONNA EAT STEAK TOO HA HA HA HA!!!"

In other words, for every PETA a-hole, there is an equal and opposite reactionary a-hole

I just had to recopy all that, because it's all spot on. Although, my personal experience has shown me that there are more douchebags in the Roxy camp than there are in the animal rights camp. Many people seem really personally affronted when confronted with someone who doesn't eat meat, even if the person who doesn't eat meat isn't making an issue out of it.

PETA goes out and does sh*t; the dude in your office eaten tofu cheese probably just wants to eat his lunch and be the left the eff alone.

I disagree. It draws more attention to focus on someone who already as attention focused on them.

Unless Zeta-Jones is pelting the animals herself, it seems more proactive to go after the supplier of said furs.

I think they do. Besides the crazy sh*t that gets people talking, the do a lot of other stuff - productive AND counterproductive - that you're not really even aware of.

They seem to enjoy these staged protests.

I agree. It's a sort of guerrilla theatre.

doesn't PETA have anything better to do with their lives then be obsessed with what CZJ does or does not wear. REALLY.
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

But convincing Zeta-Jones to stop wearing fur (which essentially they're wanting her to do) won't stop the fur business from thriving. It just seems like a waste of time and a publicity stunt that won't cause any world change. If she gave up fur would any animals go unharmed by her decision not to purchase fur? Unless she has her own pelting farm, doubtful. Nothing will come of their protest that will makes the lives of animals safer or happier.

"it seems more proactive to go after the supplier of said furs"

Not if they want any press. It is better to target a celebrity who may be forced to rethink their actions and more than likely will make a public statement.

While I dont agree with some of what PETA does (I,like Phyllis, am no longer a paid member) I do think a high profile organization needs to be vocal about animal rights in the food and fashion industry and I am glad to have them.

The SPCA does not do what PETA does.

The way to go after the supplier of said furs is by going after the consumers of said furs. This is done by raising their consciousness. If enough people suddenly wake up to the realization that the wearing of fur comes from the brutal slaughtering and skinning of animals in some of the most horrific ways and stop buying said furs, the companies hurt and hurt big.
Much like what Oprah did with puppy mills a short while ago. By shedding light and raising peoples awareness she caused a great deal of financial hurt to said puppy mills. Sure, they are not gone, but more and more people are not going to pet stores who deal with puppy mills or are researching their breeders.

In this celebrity-obsessed age we live in, the best way to get anybody to pay attention to anything is by displaying them in PEOPLE magazine or some other pedestrian media outlet. For some reason, people actually *care* what Catherine Zeta-Jones wears. And PEOPLE magazine wants to snap photos of her. So it's only logical that an organization like PETA would make her a target.

I find it deplorable when someone wears real fur. But it's even more disgusting when the person wearing it is in the cold for a couple of minutes tops, walking about 10 feet from a warm theatre to a warm limo. (I know she signs a few autographs, which is why I gave her a "couple of minutes' to span those 10 feet instead of 15 seconds. Still...big deal. It's not like she lives in the Northernmost regions of Canada where the temperature drops to -80 degrees plus wind chill factor!)

I'm sure PETA is not protesting CZJ in order for her to directly stop wearing fur. It's all about the attention the issue gets. From the number of posts on this thread, I'm guessing they did their job well. Now, a discussion is raised. And now more people are starting to think about this issue. The seed is planted. Doesn't matter if you think they are crazy.

It's like Raum Emmanuel making his "f***ing retard" comment. National disabilities rights groups called him on it, and then he apologized and became a "spokesperson" for eliminating common usage of the word. It's good for the cause.

It's the old "It's okay for ME to talk about my beaver, but it's not okay for YOU to respond to it!" argument.
