I saw the first preview of PORGY AND BESS last night and was completely blown away by the production The voices alone are enough to make you leap to your feet and worship the actors But the entire production-oh my god from the beautiful costumes, powerful choreography, and soulful performances, Porgy and Bess is EVERYTHING a Broadway show should be AND MORE
Diane Paulus' staging is perfect--so carefully done yet, as an audience member, it feels real and all the movement and singing is driven by the story--there is nothing "theater" about this show, and yet it is theater at its true roots
You become so entranced in the voices and the story that the entire show dances by you in the fastest two and a half hours of your like I could have stayed in the audience and the seen the show again from beginning to end
you caught me I'm actually Audra McDonald writing to promote the show haha
dude, go see this show and then we can talk about how this is the first REAL musical on Broadway that makes you actually feel something there's no belty ballads or gimmicks its real art
the show does not feel staged, choreographed, or rehearsed. Sometimes I feel that a play seems like everything is anticipated and the director and designers have made an effort to remind the audience that they are in a theater by using gimmicks and such. Porgy and Bess is directed and acted in such a way that it does not feel directed or rehearsed--the story and action unfolds before your eyes. This kind of magic that allows an audience to be completely captured by a story and the music is what I believe to be the true essence of theater. I have not experienced this kind of magic in a while--not since the first time I experience theater, stimulating my passion and love for the stage
The least they could do is hire already existing members to sing its praises for money. I'm game if they want to give me call. Here's an example of my skills: "this sho is tru ART!!!!!! its so good!!!!!!! go see it now!!!!!!"
Yeah, over half a century of belty ballads really brought down the art form. Now if we can just get rid of those uptempo dance production numbers and maybe we can get to the true meaning of musicals.

this is a website dedicated to theater and this is a message board to discuss Broadway if you don't care about what I'm saying than just stop reading but I only posted because I was so moved by the performance and I feel compelled to post somewhere about it I want to engage in a conversation about the work--I know it has been getting a lot of heat from Sondheim, which is why my friend wanted to see it first preview, thinking maybe Sondheim would show up haha, and I really would love hear what others have to say
Follies--and was dissappointed not much I loved about that other than the costumes I did see HAIR four times, also directed by Diane Paulus that was a really terrific production

So this poster was sent here to tell us that Porgy and Bess looks like it hasn't been staged, choreographed or rehearsed...? Effective marketing, clearly.

AW, a suggestion, and i offer this in all seriousness. You joined today, and your very first post is this over the top glowing review of a show that, everywhere else, has been greeted with a degree of skepticism. Yours didnt read like a fan's post. It read like a PR statement, making you look like an obvious plant. The fact that your writing style changes from one post to another really isnt helping your case much. If you intend to do this as a profession — and there's little wrong with that: the claque has an honoured place in theatre history — try to appear at least a bit as though you wrote everything yourself.
last time I post on here thought I might find some fellow theater loving friends in need of a powerful and rich theater experience that has been long overdue
I'm tired of satirical musicals and movie/musicals..ie legally blonde, spiderman, and Shrek
porgy and bess is what we've been waiting for so go see it and then let's talk about it
finally, Broadway has gotten back in touch with its artistic side and let hollywood deal with commercializing art and going after money
