PQ Closing - Need help with another show - Xanadu?

I know everyone hates these threads however we out of town folks don't have the luxury of seeing what we want when we want to.

Pirate Queen just announced its closing so now I need to see another show (notice the word need?). Trip is planned for Aug 29 - September 2nd for 4 people.
Itinerary so far:
Chorus Line
Curtains
Mary Poppins (others in party wanted to see this)
Spring Awakening
Legally Blonde

I have seen many other musicals on Broadway except for Jersey Boys (351.00 for premium tickets is just not worth it). Lovemusik and 110 will have closed by August. I just noticed that Grey Gardens has ticket now till September but was concerned that it wouldn't make it till then. Company I just don't seeing lasting much longer. I have seen Drowsy Chaperone 4 times and Hairspray 3 times, Color Purple, Company, Grey Gardens, Phantom, Mamma Mia, Rent, etc. I don't think I want to see Les Miz again and I don't think I want to see Grease. Tarzan? (Never again!)

And of course there is Xanadu. I have read and reread the "reviews" here so far and am considering this. Someone suggested that it may be the hit of the Summer. If so, I want to get my tickets now to have good seats.

Thanks for your help.
Please be kind.

If you've seen Drowsy four times, then you might like Xanadu. It's a hysterically awful, truly bad skewering of showbiz pretensions -- so funny you'll have tears streaming down your face.

Steve, if I were you, I'd see Xanadu.

Les Miz is an awful revival. Jersey Boys is overrated. I think youd seen all the good Musicals already. Dont you wanna try off Broadway or a Play ? Lets hope Company will win the TONYS , so it could stick that longer .. I hope so. I am seeing Xanadu soon, so I cant really weigh on that !

If 110 IN THE SHADE extends through Labor Day, then there will be no contest as to what to see. The show is incredible and so is Audra.

Do not waste your time or money on XANADU...it is awful.

A straight play. Unless 110 IN THE SHADE extends...

Yup- "110 in the Shade" will probably your best bet, if it extends. Dont be like me, I see all Musicals (in regardless --including Xanadu, wink ! ) But -have a nice trip and enjoy NYC -j*

Much as I would love for 110 to extend that long, according to Playbill.com, The Ritz starts previews at Studio 54 on September 14. That's NOT a lot of time for an unload and load.

If you were coming in 4 days earlier, I'd say The Year of Magical Thinking. Not a musical, but excellent. It's closing on August 25th. Other than possibly Radio Golf, it doesn't look like there will be any straight plays running.

"It's finally closing? Thank Christ! Now the cast can do something that isn't a total boring failure."

Right. I'm sure they knew they were signing up for a "total boring failure" when they started Pirate Queen.

I just got my PQ refund and got tix for Company instead. A good change it turns out.

I wanted Grey Gardens but their discount code expires 3 days before I needed it. Oh well...

Well I did see Grey Gardens in December and enjoyed it! Perhaps the Tony Awards will give it a boost and it will last through the summer?

Sometimes it's good to see something new however which is why I posted this thread.

I wonder when we'll find out if 110 extends through Sept 2nd? I guess I just assumed Chorus Line or Company would win Best Revival.

I second that- GREY GARDENS !!! once is not enough

You better off seeing something good, rather than bec. you wanted to see something new that you have not seen..I should take my own advice, huh?

Grey Gardens again instead of Xanadu...its just I already had my half-shirt
and short short for the show plus I am sporting a permed hair now ! wink !-j*

Grey Gardens will be open because Ebersole is going to win the Tony, and hopefully, so is Mary Louise Wilson, who is also superb. I saw Mary Poppins twice in London and absolutely loved it. Those are the ones I'd recommend.

I concurr Grey Gardens absolutely, all the way...and if Company is still around(which unfortunately I doubt) I would say to see that it is amazing

Just got back from Xanadu. I have to disagree with WAT and Munk. It was a lot of fun. Hardly terrible. I would recommend it, but not over something like Grey Gardens or 110 in the Shade.

re: PQ Closing - Need help with another show - Xanadu?

Thanks for everyone's advice. I came to my senses and I decided that it would be best to replace the cancelled Pirate Queen's September 2nd tickets with Grey Gardens instead (4th Row Center Orchestra). We will be seeing Legally Blonde later that night so it will be a contrast of shows that day!

P.S. We still have the Saturday night available and were going to go on a dinner cruise around the city. Who knows, maybe we will replace that with Xanadu?

I'd like to recommend "Avenue Q". Howie Michael Smith and the entire cast are awesome. Did I mention that H.M.S. is awfully cute? Anway, "Avenue Q" should be a fun show for you....unless you're squeamish about puppet sex... (who knew?). R C in Austin, Texas

I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
