I think it's actually set to be released in June, so it probably won't be available at the May show; sorry.
I, too, hope it's complete--and that they include the dancing (in my opinion, the percussive sound of the dancers' feet really "makes" "Sail to the Stars").

My only hope is that they release the recording before the show closes. I'm a Boubil and Schonberg fan, so I think I would like the show, but I don't have enough money to waste on a show that I may not like. If I hear the music before, I'll be able to decide whether I want to see PQ or another musical and it won't be such a gamble.

Stephanie, I think you may have misheard what we say to the question about recording at the Hilton. We tell people the show will be in the studio mid-April, with a mid-June release date. That is what the producers have said. With this announcement, I guess they were not lying.
But you are right. . .we are dumb as rocks.

Erik, I mean no disrespect to you, but I heard a man and a woman tell people 4 times while I was in the "shop" (this was March 11th) that the cd would be THERE in mid-april...
so while you know what you are talking about...they clearly did not :)
Sorry, i didn't mean that to sound COMPLETELy rude :)

Wonderful news indeed. I too am hoping it will be a complete recording.
Word is the PQ box office is getting stronger daily and that they're performing on The View soon.
Looks like the producers aren't giving up hope quite as quickly as some here may have thought.

I found that the score got stronger each time I heard it
(3 times)
Many people will be surprised that this beautiful score got such unfair (in my opinion) reviews.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 12:23amHere's hoping "The Woman That I Am" is a bonus track! And "Son of the Irish Seas," too, so that everyone can see that they are missing out on a very catchy upbeat melody that could easily have replaced the boring, banal 12/8 melody in the beginning of both acts.

Merchandise seller said, last night, that a recording should be available in June, AND that it will be recorded with the "Irish Symphony Orchestra".
I guess that means it won't be "complete", but rather "highlights".
p.s. Do you think we'll get to hear the dancers' stamping feet, or will it be the Irish musicians' percussings.
#39re: PQ cast recording set to happen
Posted: 4/12/07 at 9:12pmwhy does the involvment of Irish Symphony Orchestra imply that it will be a highlights recording?

I hope this Boubil and Sconberg recording elevates the attention this score deserves.
The fact that the critics found it derivative confuses me.
What did they expect?
Duncan Sheik?
I like his music, but on Broadway I want to hear a Large choral sound and Love songs that connect people to each other and I feel this score does that.
I think the recording may do very well.
feel free to call me an Idiot, but I like the score.

I think the merchandise seller was pulling your leg with the bit about the "Irish Symphony Orchestra", unless that's the official term for the 11 piece band in the Hilton's pit.
Someone on the CastRec list reported that PQ still hasn't found a label to fund and distribute this CD. It might end up being a self-funded release.

You're right, of course. It may be like the Les Miserables Complete Symphonic Recording.

I don't believe he was pulling my leg, but we all have received bad information in the past from ushers and vendors.
I also don't know if "Irish Symphony Orchestra" means the London Irish Symphony Orchestra, or the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, or Ireland's RTE National Symphony Orchestra.
I doubt that he had a clue.
p.s. I "quick counted" 17 pieces in the pit.
I don't know how many stamping/stomping feet that includes.

When I (very briefly) spoke to Boubil after the show on March 31st, he commented "can you believe there's only 11 musicians??" (I couldn't).
So there ya go....11 musicians...possibly 17 instruments though, with doubled parts and such.

You are probably closer. I counted during intermission and included some unoccupied spaces.
From Local 802 News, November 2006
[maybe outdated or updated in March 2007]:
15) "The Pirate Queen" — opens at the Hilton Theatre in April 2007. Theatre minimum: 19. Actual orchestra size: 12.
Status: The union is presently evaluating the Special Situations application
p.s. I guess the stamping/stomping feet count changes too.

bryan, guess what? They have faded away forever. Go buy some greatest hits albums and you'll have the recordings you want.

If you saw 17 musicians down there, the extra 6 were probably potential subs watching the parts that they're hoping to learn.
This is a very common sight after a show first opens. Musicians generally aren't allowd to sub out until a show has opened, and by then they're all anxious to take some nights off and lots of wanna-be pit musicans show up to give it a try.

Having been in attendance last night, I can say (with wholehearted belief) that PQ was in fact SOLD-OUT last night ... Packed to the rafters, and rightfully so! For those of you who were there last night (the 12th), I was indeed the guy who started the standing-o (hahaha). I'm super excited for the cast recording; beautiful, lush score from 'the masters of the popera', as far as I'm concerned.
<--- I'll have my full review up soon enough!
Best,
