LuPone is great in the clip, but her diction is awful. Patti has a tendency to steam roll through things, and I feel she does that in this clip too. She has almost no connection to the ensemble (who we now know through her memoir that she hated them).
I honestly felt Sutton brought a gravity to the number-she was clearly connected to the ensemble throughout. She was enjoying herself immensely and her joy translated. This was communicated in her Tony speech when she discussed how much she loved her job. Sutton brought an authenticity to the role that people clearly enjoyed. Sutton is kind of tomboy at heart and her Reno was very relatable.
I also think Patti looks eerily like Madonna in that clip.

Her being a tomboy--and I agree about that--is largely why her Reno didn't work for me.
I don't think Patti ever said she hated them, did she? I only recall her finding the work ethic of some of them to be lacking.

Posted: 6/24/13 at 8:57pmThat's correct Reginald. She never stated she hated them. I don't know where that came from since it is nowhere to be found in her memoirs. Disliking their work ethic and actually hating them are too entirely different things.

Remind us what your connection to the show was.

Posted: 6/24/13 at 9:39pmMaybe she didn't say she hated them but when Ms. LuPone expresses her disdain for someone or something she might as well be. She pretty much writes you off.

One of the things that annoyed me most about Sutton's performance was how artificial I found a lot of her singing. She seemed to be adding mannerisms and weird affectations that didn't come organically. I thought she'd knock it out of the park vocally, and she really fell flat for me in that area.

I didn't know that, Bettyboy.
I've only known a handful of people who've worked with her, including two in "Anything Goes," but I never got that impression. But I can imagine that different people have had different experiences.

Posted: 6/24/13 at 10:02pmThe 2003 National Theater revival in London was supposed to transfer in 2005 after premiering in LA at the Ahmanson. They offered Reno to Catherine Zeta-Jones but once she declined, the transfer fell through. Would've loved to have seen her in the role.

Posted: 6/24/13 at 10:06pmReg, I am sure Patti is professional. I have nothing against her. But it seems like she either digs you or she doesn't. If she doesn't, its not good. I think she was really wounded by the Evita cast, so she is cautious with her casts. I know people she was cool to and some she was hostile to.

So was this company bigger than the Sutton revival company? And why does Patti's face look so... weird?
And this is based on absolutely nothing but I'm gonna guess that Patti and the hot blonde dancer who finishes the song to the right of her on the screen didn't get along.
