There were people scurrying throughout the mezz tonight dealing with the light problem. I heard one lighting guy talking to the usher during intermission saying he thinks they finally figured out the problem. And I guess they did since there were no issues during the equally strange second act.
At the stage door, Patti was none too pleased with the lights, either. Lol

It is interesting to hear how some people find it boring and indulgent, and others find it flawed-but-within-salvation and a moving evening.
From the wildly mixed responses to this show on this board and ATC, it sounds like they could have a hit on their hands if they hand a strong director (who wasn't onstage) to clean up the show a bit. And of course, if it didn't open in a few days...

Posted: 11/18/11 at 1:53amI've always found both performers to be indulgent, so unfortunately, reading these posts doesn't make me want to see it. If anything, I'd see it for the seemingly awkward scene work! The bench scene? Haha...

It's wildly self indulgent. To those saying its for "theatre lovers"-I got news for you. I'M A THEATRE LOVER and I thought this act was a piece of crap. Don't infer that if someone doesn't "get it" that they somehow are not fully immersed in theatre.
What they are doing is spare, experimental, and uneven. It doesn't deserve to be on Broadway. Rule #1-know your audience. People will be coming in expected some "hits", some rapport with the stars, and a show stopper or two. Theatre fans can handle some earnest attempts at edginess but the whole show is very odd.
This avant garde ego trip is not worth what they are charging.

Posted: 11/18/11 at 11:33pmAmen, Betty. Amen. I am totally familiar with the shows from which they are drawing, but I just think that it's ridiculous that they're doing so. Frankly, I am the target audience for this show, and I loathed it. And that's why I think it's a failure...if it can't interest the kind of person who would (and, on several occasions, has) paid money for shows at least in part, if not specifically, to see Patti LuPone (or, for that matter, Mandy Patinkin, though that would be other people and not me), then who the hell is it going to interest?

Posted: 11/18/11 at 11:37pmThis show seriously is beyond strange. It's great to hear some of those songs live and to hear Mandy compliment Patti's tits but thats hardly worth $130.

I was one of those theatre-lover-queens that REALLY struggled with Ms. LuPone early on -- and I witnessed THE BAKER'S WIFE, etc. In time, post-SUNSET, I came to appreciate LuPone more and praised her successes in MASTER CLASS and other shows. However darlings, all that Madam LuPone touches does NOT turn to gold -- as it would appear so with this one, from what manny of you offer here.
I'm hardly crying about missing this one as I CAN'T STAND Mandy Patinkin.
Their headed to my neighborhood next -- "DIRECT FROM BROADWAY"... ugh.

Posted: 11/18/11 at 11:56pmI will say Patti looks gorgeous in the stills from the show. When I saw the show she had no makeup on and wore a moo moo. She looks like a million now.

It was perfect. Had front row seats tonight - paid full price, and would do it again. Patti and Mandi are a sure thing - the music and emotion, tears and laughter. We had a blast. Standing O in the middle of the show and at the end. She signed my copy of her autobiography at stage door and was so cordial and nice.
Everyone needs to get over themselves. Have seen her twice in Gypsy, and her Woulda coulda shoulda show last year. Perfection each time.

Posted: 11/20/11 at 2:42amWould much rather see Bernadette and Mandy over Patti and Mandy, or just Patti or Mandy alone...I think Patti and Mandy are 2 of the finest performers (and Sondheim interpreters) in the biz today, but this doesn't quite sound worth the $$$$

Suffered through this this afternoon.
I LOVE Patti Lupone, and love her solo show (saw Could, Woulda Shoulda at NJPAC), but absolutely loathed this entire affair. Betty pretty much summed it up best- this is what happens when you let Patti take cues from the insufferable Mandy Patinkin, who is credited as the "director" of this ego trip. With no one to reign either of them in, they're just completely unhinged, especially Mandy. I wanted to run away during his rendition of Buddy's Blues. Also, can someone please tell me why he sexually harasses Patti by groping her boobs during at least 3 different numbers?
Patti fares better, but she really needs to let go of the fact that she never got to play the ingenue in any of the Rodgers and Hammerstein shows. The sequences where she lives out that fantasy are just bizarre.
It was kind of amusing that they both refuse to mention the names "Evita" or "Andrew Lloyd Weber", but because they didn't tell the story of WHY they both hate him, at least half the audience wasn't in on the joke and just sat there perplexed.
Seemed like a giant waste of Patti's time and talents.
Sidenote...the house staff at the Barrymore has to be the most incompetent on Broadway. There were only 2 ushers trying to seat the orchestra and neither of them seemed to know the layout of the theater. We had box seats, but neither seemed to realize that. The first usher tried to sit us in orchestra F 1 and 3. The other usher looked at the tickets and said, "You're in the box." I said, "I know, which one?" He said, "Oh I don't know. Up there somewhere." Extremely helpful.
Sidenote #2...the view from the box is horrendous and not worth any amount of money. Fortunately, there were seats in the side mezz that we moved to about 15 minutes into the show.

Why does Mandy hate ALW? Just because Patti does?
EDIT: I understand ALW hurt her with Sunset, but he put the 2 of them on the map. They won Tonys for their work in his show and it essentially launched their careers. Without him they most likely wouldn't have the name recognition that they do today (and certainly would not be performing together).

I just got back from this afternoon's performance and enjoyed the show quite a lot. Even at a little under two hours, it can feel a bit long but watching these two legends nail song after song after song is quite a treat. It's a good matinee show...entertaining, but obviously not much substance. It's basically just a concert. It's like Hugh Jackman for the geriatric crowd. And it works for the most part. I had a good time.

Anyone else share my sentiments in regard to Mandy's voice grating on their ears?
Don't get me wrong. I give him credit for a lot of things. It's very obvious he is a great singer because if not he would not have the success he has. But FOR ME, his voice is very...annoying I guess. I played Archie in "The Secret Garden" and for the first few days of rehearsal when we played the CD when we did read through's I would sit and listen to him. But for the life of me I could NOT enjoy his voice. There is something about it that drives me bonkers.

There is something annoying about it but I can handle it, and would say I even enjoy it, on the Sunday in the Park and Wild Party cast albums (but not Evita et al).
It was unfortunate that when I saw Patti/Mandy, Mandy sounded like he was overpowering Patti. Obviously no one had come to see him so he should have turned his Mic down or sung a little quieter, lol.
But I just realised that if Mandy sung Rose's Turn and Patti acted out Louise's part at the end it would have made the show so, so much better.
