Because that’s how she performed it almost 40 years ago on Broadway. She recorded the American Premiere cast album differently than how she actually performed/sang the role on the actual stage singing up to the balcony level.

Platt forgot to actually perform but sounded fine. Don’t really see the “it” factor.

Patti sounded amazing! Ben sounded & looked very nervous.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I like Ben Platt and think he is very talented but felt like he was performing the song as Evan Hansen. It just didn’t do it for me, especially on the heels of watching Tveit perform a few WSS numbers a few weeks ago at the Lincoln Center special.

Patti’s performance was fantastic, but the tone and pace of that song brought the momentum of the show to a screeching halt.

Ben did seem nervous but I loved the arrangement and he sang it well. I will admit I was really skeptical about him singing the song.

Harvey Fierstein said it best just now in his tweet. In a room full of pop star millionaires, two Broadway performers blew the roof off MSG.

Platt seemed very nervous at the start (how could you not be!). His vibrato was distracting to me. But by the middle of the song, he hit his stride and finished strong. That standing O should not be under-appreciated.

Patti was.. wow. I've never been a huge Patti fan, but she just delivered a masteclass in how to perform a legendary song on music's biggest night in a landmark venue. Her voice seems to only get stronger, and I have no doubt she could outsing just about anyone in that arena.

Brava, Patti. Brava.
