No disrespect intended toward Mr. Prince, but I think we need to name theaters after women. How about the Ethel Merman, or the Angela Lansbury?

Honestly, this makes me nervous. I want to keep some of the "historic" and famous names of the older Broadway theatres. I worship Hal Prince, but I want to keep it the Majestic.

FYI, if you knew ANYTHING about the Shuberts you'd know that a petition of this sort is a phenomenally tone-deaf means of attempting this change, even were there a consensus, which this thread already makes clear there is not.

Please, NO!

Please, NOOOOOO!

We have no Tennessee Williams Theatre.

We have no Arthur Miller Theatre.

We have no Cole Porter Theatre.

We have no Oscar Hammerstein Theatre.

Please, NOOOOOO!

I don't see this happening until he dies. He's certainly more deserving than some of the critics that we have theatres renamed for, or American Airlines.

Did either of those two women make as large a contribution to the American theatre than Hal Prince?

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

^ This

I was upset when the Royale became the Jacobs and the Plymouth became the Schoenfeld.

I know! The powers that be the Shubert Organization back then but come on renaming those theaters after Bernie & Gerry...well, maybe someday the St. James will be renamed the Jordan Roth...ha!

I hear they were thinking about renaming the Broadway the Smith but they thought it would get confused with the restaurant chain of the same name. At least they won't have that problem when they rename the Winter Garden the Wankel.

I also think, in general, renaming theaters like the Majestic is a bad idea. Take the Richard Rodgers. It was known for over 60 years as the 46th Street Street. Maybe a dull name, but, at least, the name told you where the building was located. And by 1990, when it was renamed, there had been a lot of theater history associated with "the 46th Street Theatre." And why name that particular theater for Richard Rodgers? Both of his shows that opened there were flops. Cole Porter had more shows there. Ethel Merman had more shows there. Frank Loesser had two huge hits there. Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse had more hit shows there as well.

If I were going to name or rename a theater, I would probably consider the name of a producer or director like Prince or an actor or actress. The names of playwrights, composers, and lyricists like Arthur Miller, Tennesse Williams, etc., will continue to be on theater marquees, even if no theater itself is named after them.

I also agree that if we are going to name a new theater or re-name an old one, it should be after a woman. Only 2-1/2 Broadway theaters are named after a woman. How about Hallie Flanagan, Cheryl Crawford, or Eva Le Gallienne? (I know. Most of you are saying, "who"? Maybe that's a good reason for considering names like these.)

Let us remember that there is no "we" in this process. It's not like naming a city park; these are privately owned buildings. And if "we" decide to assume control over the naming of buildings, I have a suggestion of a name I would prioritize for removal well before "we" got to any Shubert consigliere.

Sounds like a better reason for NOT considering names like those.

The Majestic Prince Theatre? lol

but no, I think the Majestic and it's name is a bit to famous for a name change, like changing the Palace Theatre to the Judy Garland Theatre, just leave it alone

how is the name of the Majestic any more "famous" than any other theatre?

I think "we" should just delete the names of all theatres and henceforth refer to them only by their addresses.

When you are done getting signatures for this petition - then what? What do you do with it? Who do you give it to? Did you already receive info from the owner of the theatre that they are considering changing the name?

no they are not. what will happen after the petition is submitted and tossed in the waste basket, the OP will start a thread blasting the Shuberts for failing to act of the silly petition. That should be good for a few hundred posts at least.
