Best:
Ragtime at City Center (I know it's not broadway o well)
Maybe Happy Ending (best new musical in years)
Lempicka (I loved it, I admit its imperfect)
Worst:
Probably Water for Elephants tho i didn't see many of the "worst" things
My scope is WIDE (Broadway, off-Broadway, regional, and London) so I’ll just stick to Broadway and mention others elsewhere:
Broadway:
- Best Musical: MAYBE HAPPY ENDING - I’m by no means one of the crazy superfans of this show (yet), but I have to admire the fact that this was an ORIGINAL work of pure artistry and everything gels into a beautiful and heartwarming package.
- Best Play: OH MARY - I’ll put this one here even though I saw it 10x at the Lortel and 6x (and counting) on Broadway. Pure genius. Nothing else to be said.
- Worst Musical: ONCE UPON A MATTRESS - I was bored out of my skull and thought that the amount of talent on stage was ridiculously wasted. I almost walked out at intermission.
- Worst Play: ROMEO & JULIET - I’m not listening to the Gen Z here. Even as someone still relatively young (30), I found this production to be overly chaotic, directionless, lacking focus, and some of the most pandering “modernization” I have ever seen of a classic work. Sam Gold should be ashamed that this got as far as it did.
Elsewhere:
Best Musical: NEXT TO NORMAL (London), CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL (off-Broadway), DEAD OUTLAW (off-Broadway), A STRANGE LOOP (Los Angeles), JELLY’S LAST JAM (NYCC)
Best Play: PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS (West End), THE FIRES (off-Broadway), THE HOT WING KING (West End), TABLE 17 (off-Broadway), THE OTHER AMERICANS (Arena Stage, DC)
Worst Musical: A SIGN OF THE TIMES (off-Broadway), YOUR LIE IN APRIL (West End)
Worst Play: SH1T MEET FAN (off-Broadway), SOMETHING SPECTACULAR (off-Broadway),

Best:
Sunset Blvd. (can't overestimate its impact on the audiences)
Suffs
Appropriate
Cult of love
Water for elephants (don't understand the hate, many shows wished they had such a competent director and flawless stagecraft)
Our Town
The Outsiders
Worst:
Illinoise (absolute worst, meaningless production I've ever seen)
Cabaret (insufferable, walked out at intermission)
Once upon a mattress (only the double cocktail kept me in my seat till the end)
An enemy of the people (style over substance)

I thought I was the ONLY person on this board that absolutely loathed Stereophonic - glad to see I'm not completely alone. I also loved Lempicka... Sounds like we may have similar taste!"
You are definitely not the only one. It was the show where I have counted the most walk outs and empty seats post intermission. People felt obliged to see Stereophonic after the off-Broadway acclaim and Tony sweep but it's definitely not for everyone.
With something like stereophonic, it’s not that i hated it, it’s just I didn’t get it. I’ve been told from a few people that they’re surprised someone my age actually sat through it (I’m 16) and surprised when I didn’t swap my tickets to see cabaret again, which I seriously considered doing.
The only things I actually ‘dreaded’ this year were the Dead Evan Hansen tour and the Ain’t Too Proud tour which, although weren’t broadway were the ones I would consider the worst.
The best thing year for me (out of the 5 I actually saw on broadway) were Cabaret and Sunset Blvd. I thought I was going to hate cabaret and sunset, I saw cabaret 17 times before this and had no clue what sunset was about. But the preshow at cabaret was probably the coolest ****ing thing I’ve ever seen in a theatre, me and my little brother ran around the theatre watching everything and exploring the space, best hour and 300$ I’ve ever spent. And sunset was just a seriously beautiful show, I’d wanna see it again and again. Mandy Gonzalez should win the tony, even though she isn’t principal Norma. Such a damn good show.
also the outsiders was bland and I have no clue how people liked it.
Best: Oh! Mary!
Worst: Tammy Faye
Swing Joined: 8/23/14
Best: Death Becomes Her, Sunset, Gypsy, Attack on Titan(bias cause I love that show)
Worst: SH*T Meet Fan(if it wasn't one act I would have left), Suffs, Mary Jane, Hold on to me darling

Show that made all the wrong choices but it was still fun: The Wiz
How did it make the wrong choices?

Would I be correct to assume that you saw Sunset Blvd only once, and therefore did not see Nicole Scherzinger?

On the flipside, on the worst end I can guarantee the dogpiling on Tammy Faye is only because it closed recently and nobody saw the worse shows (Patriots anyone? Most of the shows we've forgotten by now). If Lempicka closed recently I guarantee that would be the one getting all the hate. Not that I'm defending Tammy, it definitely wasn't the best but it doesn't jump out anywhere close to the worst shows I've seen as of lately. Now if Walking with Ghosts was on here... That can take the bottom spot."
Patriots was one of my favorite this year, to each their own."
I saw Patriots in London and absolutely loved it, so you are not alone. I was really surprised just how badly it did in NYC.

I saw a bootleg of Nicole, but you’d be correct. Only had 5 shows I could see and sunset fit right into my Tuesday slot
